Hello. Carla is a free VST host that can be used as an alternative to Vienna Ensemble Pro.
Unfortunately, when it is loaded into Dorico as a VST FX or VST instrument, it is impossible to view the plugin’s interface.
So, I don’t know if the issue is with the Carla plugin or with Dorico.
Carla requires starting Dorico with Rosetta because it is not a VST3 plugin (only VST).
I would like to clarify that Carla displays correctly with other software (tested with several DAWs on macOS 12.3.1, Mac Studio M1).
Thanks for the data. Carla does not get blacklisted but normally detected and loaded. However, when looking at the log file, no other VSTinstruments or VSTFxPlugins are found by the audio engine, not even the ones from the Dorico plug-in-set. And also basically no vstsound contents will get found.
What kind of installation is that or how did you install? I’m asking because that looks all quite abnormal.
The version of Dorico used to test the Carla plugin is installed in a virtual machine (UTM on Apple M1). I have the habit of testing all new plugins in a VM to validate them before deploying them on my work computer to avoid any compatibility issues because I can’t afford to have a malfunctioning professional machine. We don’t have control over what gets installed when software or plugins scatter files around. This explains why there are no other VST and VSTsound entries in the logs I sent. Dorico is installed without the MediaBay or Sonic, so it’s “normal”, if I may say, to see certain lines in the logs.
Hope this helps.
I"ve downloaded Carla and installed it to my M1 MacMini. It shows the same behaviour here with me, in both Dorico 5 and Cubase 12. So I dare say that it is a plug-in side problem.
Weird because Carla loads correctly in Studio One 6, Notion 6, Kushview Element, PluginGuru Unify, Tracktion Waveform, FL Studio.
I tested it with all of these programs, and the plugin interface displays properly. It’s unfortunate that it doesn’t work in Dorico. Too bad.
Thank you Ulf for taking the time to check by installing the plugin and for providing a quick response.
Since only the GUI is not shown, maybe it is just some framework like JUCE that is missing. Maybe the other plug-in hosts have it installed and use it themselves, I don’t know, don’t want to spend too much time on finding out.
