Change Link Group for many tracks at once

Problem: I have lots of guitar tracks.

I want to link them all to the Guitar VCA.

How can I do this quickly and all at once? (the black box at the top of each track is the Link Group)

Highlight the channels, right click, select - Add VCA Fader to Selected Channels.

Only works for new VCA, not to link to existing. Thanks though

I can confirm this - having the same issue here. I have several existing VCA tracks setup, and I want to link a bunch of new tracks to a particular VCA that is existing - with Q-Link enabled and all these tracks selected, I can only set the link for one track and not all tracks at once.

  1. select all tracks that you want to assign to the VCA
  2. click in the box where you assign the VCA
  3. before clicking on the desired VCA press and hold SHIFT and ALT (win)*
  4. click/select the desired VCA

*it’s the same command as you would use for doing ‘something’ to all selected tracks, like inserting the same plugin on selected tracks or muting all selected tracks (while clicking). Sometimes you have to hold the modifier keys before clicking in a selection-box and sometimes you have to do it after you open the box, but always before clicking on the selection.

Thanks for your reply! I’ve tried that - it doesn’t work like this - perhaps it’s because I am on a Mac? I tried what you suggested in the particular steps you provided however it only changes the VCA for the 1st track out of all tracks selected.

Am familiar with this function/command of ‘doing something to all’ - coming from Pro Tools Shift + Alt behaviour.

It should work the same for assigning VCAs by clicking in the VCA “box” in the mixer and selecting the desired VCA. If it isn’t working then the problem is (should be) when you hold down the modifier keys. As I mentioned, in some cases, like on the direct summing selection (I think), you’ll need to open the box first and then press the modifiers and in other cases you can start with the modifiers before opening the box.

Just try different options. I would be surprised if it isn’t working in Cubase. It works in Nuendo on Windows.

It works in Nuendo but not Cubase for some reason.

An oversight that has not been corrected yet.

OK OMG I SOLVED IT. (I didn’t ‘solve’ it - I guess it’s just the wondrous process of learning Cubase. Cubase folks go like “Ha this person didn’t read the manual”)

The ‘solution’ which is the actual way this process was intended to be. I think the confusion arises when most of us create VCA’s with selecting a bunch of tracks and then right click - Add Track - Add VCA Track to Selected Tracks. But what if one has already created a bunch of VCA Tracks and want to re-direct a selection of tracks to this particular VCA?

Proper workflow / solution:

  1. Select a bunch of tracks you want to link together in the Mix Console.
  2. Click on ‘Link’ at the top of the Mix Console.*

  3. ‘Link Group Settings’ pops up, select the checkbox “Use VCA Fader” and click the dropdown beside to select the pre-existing VCA fader you already have.
  4. De-select all other checkboxes below (vol, pan, sends, EQ etc.).

*A note that if you are redirecting to another VCA group you would have to un-link the pre-existing link for a particular track(s) before creating a new link and then selecting a different VCA.
