I’m working on a score exported from a midi file. The score is in 6/8 but really is a 3/4 jazz waltz. Is there a relatively easy and quick way to change the meter AND double the existing note lengths? I’ve been digging for an answer and digging through the Dorico menus. The easy part is changing the meter. Changing the note values “globally” is what has me stumped.
They must be done separately. And the difficulty depends on the complexity of the notes.
In general you would:
Select notes.
Engage Insert mode.
Write>Edit duration>Double note durations
Disengage Insert
Change the time signature.
There can be complications, particularly with tuplets and multiple voices. Only notes are affected so things like text, chord symbols or dynamics will not move.
Without Insert, Dorico will overwrite the next note(s) as it doubles the duration of an earlier note.
With Insert, Dorico will add extra musical time so no notes are overwritten.
I also discovered things like repeats and other formatting aren’t linked and get jacked up. At this point, we’ll probably just read it in 6/8 and I’ll fix it for the future.
Hi @Kerry_Moffit, if you would like to send the file, I would do it for you (as an exercise for myself in Dorico functionalities). I have some time now…
I meant: I would try to do the transformation you need in your file, searching for the fastest way to do it, and then I can make a short video showing a suggestion for the workflow, as you asked:
