Changes in Dorico Score Don't Show Up In Parts

I’ve just found out today that a lot of the work I did when I was putting music into the SCORE does not appear in the PARTS. I have attached two screenshots. The first is a shot of the score, showing two measures where I made some changes … I changed the direction of the stems, changed the noteheads, hid the ledger lines, moved the articulations to the stem side, etc. The score looks fine. Then I clicked on the part, and the second screenshot is what that mess looks like. Oddly, the notehead change DID take effect, but the ledger lines are still there, stems are down, articulations are on the notehead side, etc. I’m new to Dorico from Finale, but like many composers and arrangers, I work by inputting music into the score (so I can see the whole picture), so if I make changes to the score and they DON’T end up in the part, it is frustrating and illogical to me. Am I missing something simple? Why on earth would Dorico allow me to make changes to the score, and then ignore those changes when it comes to the part? Obviously, SOME things I put into the score (pitches, rhythms, dynamics) end up in the part, so why doesn’t EVERYTHING I put into the score end up in the associated part? As I said, I just can’t see the logic there. Thanks for your help.

You probably had this set to Locally.

You can select all in the score and do

You need to be clear about local and global properties. For example, you can make decisions whether your changes apply just to the Score/Part or to both.

Also to the more general question- yes there are definitely times when a composer or copyist here needs the score to be different from the parts. So Dorico has that ability to both keep them in sync, but also selectively not when required. There are some other preferences you can set that you might run into or might want to explore, as well as layouts for one versus the other.

Thank you – I assumed it was something simple I was missing, being new to Dorico.

I understand the logic there, but I would have assumed that the default would be for changes to apply globally UNLESS I set it to be only local (i.e., only for the score). It seems like that would the case far fewer times than wanting the score and parts to match. Apparently, my logic and Dorico’s don’t match up. Thanks for your response.

I agree, and I can’t remember what the default was when I first started with Dorico, but I made sure to be set to Global as soon as I saw it.

@1941house (which is a really interesting name to me, as my house was built in 1941), see here if you’re interested for some occasionally humorous discussion of this.

Yeah, there is a preference to set it as you wish for all new projects. For me it’s a good to occasionally review my preferences and all the things under the library menu you know? I’ve a bad habit of not taking the time in the middle of the project, so I’ll set aside some admin time. I always end up realizing the significance of a setting I hadn’t before, and generally make positive updates for my workflow.
