Changing all notes to quarter notes

For violin practice, I’d like to convert every duration in an imported midi file to a quarter note. I’ve tried Select All, then 6 (Quarter Note shortcut), with Force Duration, but this doesn’t keep every note. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Try doing the same thing you did, but first hit I for Insert mode; that might work better.

Very kind of you to help me out, Stephen — thanks.

The I-first move works for the beginning, but then Dorico weirdly loses the thread. It’s the third movement of the Saint Saens Violin Concerto. Maybe it’s just too tall an order for Dorico to process all those notes.

Maybe with Insert mode on, try selecting the 16th notes by themselves and turning those into quarter; then do the 8th notes, etc. That might work a little better.

Yes — fantastic, Stephen. I couldn’t find a way to filter-select note durations, but your idea to work in smaller sections made all the difference. A page at a time, and I got there. Many thanks!

I’ve converted all notes to quarter notes, but some unwanted silences are coming in between. Apologies if I’m asking for a painfully obvious solution, but if anyone knows of a Find → Change way to get rid of these, I’d appreciate it.

Select all, Filter for Notes and chords, then look down into the Properties Panel. Deactivate “Start voice” and “End voice”.
Result: some rests will reappear.
With Insert Mode on, select them and delete them.

Brilliant solution, KB, that would have taken me several lifetimes to figure out. Many thanks!
