I’m using Cubase 12, and I’m creating an audio mockup of a traditionally notated classical score. I need to be able to change the way the grid displays, and I’m having some trouble.
The time signature of the piece is 9/8. When I set the time signature of Cubase to 9/8, the grid displays strong/weak lines in groups of 2, meaning that each bar consists of 4.5 groups of 8th notes (quavers). I’d like to change this so that the grid display within the bars reflects the actual beat division of a 9/8 time signature; i.e. 3 groups of 3 8th notes (quavers).
I know it would be easier for me to set the time signature to 3/4 and display the grid as 1/8th triplets, but I don’t want to do that. I want to be able to cross-check easily between this mockup and the score I’m working from, which will be a lot easier if the time signatures and beat divisions match each other. So I need to figure out a way to display the 8th notes (quavers) in groups of 3, not 2, and keep the time signature set to 9/8.
Is is possible to do this?
I would not be aware of any way to do this. Cubase creates an emphasized grid line either on every beat or on every other beat.

Please see below for actual correct answers.
Use Click Patterns and display (these) in the grid.

Hi,
@Danix78 is right, it is possible via the display option. However, there are a few things to beware of. Here’s how to set it up:
- Open the metronome dialog Transport/Metronome Settings and open the Click Pattern page.
Adjust your 9/8 pattern with additional stress on beat 4 and 7. Afterwards, click on the red underlined space with the star. There is no star right now - you have to click here to set this pattern up as your new default pattern for 9/8 bars (important!).
Quit the metronome settings.
- Open the ruler menu of your desired choice (project window, any editor) by clicking here
Check the option
“Use metronome click pattern for grid line emphasis”
That’s it.

Dang, I missed that. When trying to make it work I had the feeling it ought to be possible. Forgot that I needed to switch on the option in the ruler menu.
