Changing in a Piano part, non-moving notes into non-tied notes

Hi, I have a part that that has the bottom notes of a chord moving. When I input as a chord, the non-moving notes convert to tied notes as if they are moving as well.

To see what I would like to do, please check out my attachments as an example. Thank you, B

What the interpretation in the part is.

You need to change the bottom notes to a new down-stem voice. This will automatically change the three upper notes back to a quarter note. First, select the bottom notes only, and then do one of the following:

  • if a down-stem voice already exists (you may have created one earlier on), then just type V to change the selected notes to a different voice
  • OR if there’s no down-stem voice yet, then create it with ShiftV
  • OR right-click with the mouse and choose the appropriate action from the Voices → Change Voice… submenu.

Tip: activate View menu → Note and Rest Colors → Voice Colors, then you can better see which notes belong to which voice.

Hi Peter, thank you.

Earlier I did create a new voice. But, I left out forcing the other 3 notes to be up. This sorted the alignment concern :slightly_smiling_face:

Can you help me by suggesting how I can remove the rests?

This must be for cello by the looks of it.
I am not Peter, but you can remove the rests by selecting them and (from the menu) Remove Rests.
It is recommended to set up a shortkey for this (mine is Cmd-Shift-R).

As @k_b said. But there’s no need to select just the rests. Remove rests works on any selection, but only removes the rests. So here you can click on an empty bit the bar, the whole bar will be selected, notes and rests, and remove rests will remove just the rests!

I, too, urge you to create a key command for this. You will be using it frequently.

Thank you all, I have added the short key as well.

I am still wondering, your title says it’s a piano piece; following the little snippet, is it Bach Chaconne for piano left hand by any chance?

It is a bar from the introduction to Satin Doll by Duke Ellington in a different key. It is just not on a Grand Staff. I listened to Chaconne. Lovely

Thanks, I will investigate that piece
