Changing instrument sounds

Very simple question, and looking for a simple answer. I’ve watched the videos about playback sounds, but they go much farther than I need, and don’t touch on what I want.

I have started with the SATB choral template. It plays back with the ahs. I want to assign a piano sound to each staff. I’ve gotten to the Halion Sonic 7 window, and it shows tracks 1-4 as Sustain Ah. There is a fifth track showing Yamaha S90ES, which I may have put there while pushing buttons at random. (There is no piano staff in the score.)

How do I apply the piano playback sound to the SATB staves? I’m sure I’ll have more questions, but this will do, for now!
Thanks in advance.

Mike,

I only know around three things about Dorico, but this is one of them.

Click the VST button and select Garritan, then you can select instruments through the Aria player as you would in Finale.

Just drag a piano (eg the Yamaha) into each of the slots 1-4. Then change the Ex.map to the one called Default.

You can save this as an Endpoint (call it say SATB-pianos) and create a playback template for future use.

Thanks. I must be especially slow this morning. I tried the “standard” drag method: Click and hold mouse button down on the YAMAHA piano, drag to new location, release mouse button. That did nothing. Am I clicking in the wrong place, or am I just unclear on the concept?

Is there a video on this? I searched You Tube, but didn’t find anything.

It should be enough to select the channel and double click on the instrument in the chooser.

Many thanks. It was that right-hand panel that I wasn’t seeing. I copied the full window that Janus showed, and got them loaded. And Ben, your way works as well (of course!)

Whatever Instrument you select for the channel on the left, that is what sound will come out. You have “Sustain Ah” on channels 1-4, and “YAMAHA S90ES Piano” on channel 5. You have two options, one of which has already been said.

OPTION 1: Click on Soprano → Track inspector → ch.: 1 and bring that number to 5 (or whatever number your desired instrumen is on). Repeat this on all voices you want to change, they can also be on the same channel.

OPTION 2: Delete all VST in HALION SONIC7 and just leave your piano sound in channel 1. All voices will now default to using voice 1. Make sure they’re all set to the same channel.

I just did this with my orchestral score, so 16+ instruments of this was definitely a learning curve at first.

Could you not simply apply a Playback Template?

You definitely could, I just wanted to use a new VST and it didn’t have a template with it. After I made it I saved it as its own template.
