Changing length of midi file in timeline

I don’t want midi notes disappearing when trimming beginning in the timeline. like this

I want it to act like this

In your video, they’re not disappearing though.

Yes middle of the file notes are disapering, when dragging. or they are getting muted for some reason.

You might be looking for this… Click and hold on the Object Selection tool in the tool bar (the mouse pointer icon). While holding the click, you get a sub-menu to select sizing modes.

First one will straight move Midi notes with the resizing of the part, but the time stretch one will completely preserve the timing of the Midi performance as you resize it.

Keep in mind with the normal sizing, it’s not actually cutting off/out the notes from the part, it’s just assuming you don’t want the part to play that long in linear time. If you open the part, the disappeared notes will still be there just greyed out where the part ended when you dragged.

After have testing it out I don’t think that is right all the notes are still there after dragging it shorter. how do I use normal sizing and not getting greyed out? like in Reaper?

I’m still unsure what end result you’re after. In the second video of yours, notes are disappearing as you’re shortening the part/container. In Cubase they don’t fully disappear because most of Cubase’s actions are non-destructive. But the end result when you press play is the same, no?

Yes in the second video they disappear in the beginning, but are not doing the same way in Cubase, notes middle of the file is greyed out instead of just disappears in the beginning like in Reaper.

All the notes in Second video is intact after changing beginning, but not in Cubase.

If I Drag a file from beginning I only want the beginning changing nothing after that. Like in Reaper.

maybe that is not an option in Cubase…

I think I see what you mean… yeah, it’s the nature of Cubase. When you’re in the project timeline like that, theMidi part is a “container” like mlib mentioned.

When you drag the part’s start past the note(s) beginning, it’s assuming you don’t want that long note(s) to sound since you moved the container’s start past the note on message

If this is what you’re meaning, you’d have to open the part in the editor, select all the notes affected by drag selecting them, and then use the mouse to resize so the note start is within the Part’s start.

If you drag selected them all, resizing one, will equally resize them all at once.

OP wants the NoteOn event to be moved together with the left Part boundary until it reaches its NoteOff event.

However, Cubase does not work like that.

Oh I see Too bad.

Thanks for clarifying. I had a hard time seeing that in the video.

@InNorth Yes, in Cubase, changing the size of the Part (container) does not alter its content with the exception of the Time Stretch tool.

Here’s a Macro that could serve as a workaround. It does require that the Part is selected and the Cursor is placed at the new, desired start position.

And here it is in action.

Thank you, what is the Macro called?

You will have to create the macro yourself. See the screenshot in my previous post. It shows all the commands you need and in what order. Note that you can add a Key Command to the macro if you so wish.

Ok, Thanks.

Not sure what I’m doing wrong but I created the Macro but only open’s the key editor.

EDIT is working now, but I did not do anything., I still see Key editor window flashing by.

EDIT 2. Sometimes it does not work, only editor shows nothing else happends .
