I need to increase the size of the bass clef staff in my piano score, but since it is attached to a grand staff, it seems to need to be the same size as the treble clef staff. Is it possible to size them separately?
Welcome. I don’t think it matters whether it is a grand staff or not. I tried increasing a flute treble clef (at the start of a score) and the scale option in the properties panel does nothing. However, if you add a clef elsewhere in the music (flute or piano), you can change the size via the properties panel.
You could go to Library > Music Symbols, find the F clef, and change the Scale property there. But this will affect all the bass clefs in your piece, not just the piano. (I guess if your piece only has piano, this will be what you want!)
Edit: Sorry, I misread your post and thought you wanted to make the clef larger, not the staff.
Instead of adding a piano to your project, you could add the instruments Treble staff and Bass staff to separate players, increase the size of the Bass staff in write mode, change the bracket between the staves to a brace in engrave mode, and hide the staff labels in layout options:
However, cross-staff notation does not work because the staves belong to separate players. And if playback is important, realize that dynamics are not shared between the staves because each staff represents a separate instrument.
Thank you all for the ideas. Yes, I’m talking about the whole staff, not just the clef. Unfortunately I have to make this change to 25 pieces! :-o
I’m curious: Why do you need this? What does it represent?
The bass staff will actually be empty, allowing people to notate the left hand by hand. The regular size staff is pretty small for notation, especially for people without much experience notating, so I wanted to spread the staff lines out a bit.
Wouldn’t it work for you just to make both staves bigger? That’s much easier.
It’s not ideal, but I might just do that!
I think the best approach is to brace two single staff players, with a workflow something like this…
- Add a sketch bass staff player.
- Cut/Copy your existing bass staff to this.
- Change your existing Piano instrument to sketch treble staff (this will remove the existing bass line)
- Brace the two staves together.
- Adjust the staff sizes to suit.
