Is it possible, or would it be possible, to be able to right-click a pitched/unpitched percussion instrument (on the 3 dots in Layout mode) and change it to the opposite type?
Currently, if I have a percussion player with a glockenspiel and I want this player to have a sus. cymbal instead, I have to add the sus. cymbal to the player and then delete the glock.
Am I missing something?
You’re not missing anything: you can’t change a pitched instrument to an unpitched one, or vice versa, because it’s difficult to sensibly translate the existing music on the instrument being replaced.
Are you referring to the coding, deciding exactly what should be translated, or both?
Well, the former is determined by the latter, of course, but what do you think Dorico should do with all of the pitched material you’ve written when you go from, say, a piano or harp to a cowbell?
Perhaps the same thing Dorico currently does if you tried to copy/paste that material to a cowbell.
I think an important consideration would be why a user actually wants to change an instrument? My reason would be because I don’t want it anymore. If I want any material preserved then I should have to sort that out myself - just as if I was deleting an instrument to create a new one (as is currently required).
If you don’t want to keep the material, then there’s really no issue with adding a new instrument to the player and then removing the old one?
Exactly. It would be nice to be able to get rid of the adding and removing steps and just change one to the other.
It’s not a big deal - just like having to choose which size you want notes to be when you turn on the scale switch - it was just a thought.
