Chord Symbol Component Kerning

Hi,

Is there a way to set a default kerning for chord symbol components? I’d like the ‘7’ in this A7 chord to be much closer to the “A”. It’s easy to change the default X offset of the ‘7’ from 0.75 to -0.25 in the Default Chord Symbol Appearance dialog but this doesn’t carry over to A7 chords with alterations.

I’ve tried editing the first ‘7’ component shown in Chord Symbol Appearance dialog in the Edit Chord Symbol Component dialog but adjusting the default X offset of -2.00 to anything else has no effect after clicking OK.

I’ve deleted all Project Default Appearances but don’t seem to be able to delete the numerous Chord Symbol Components or the Chord Symbol Music Font or LeadSheetPen fonts in Font Styles.

Some of the Chord Symbol Components boxes have trash cans and can be deleted, but reappear the next time the dialog is opened. The Font Styles trash can is grayed out for the duplicates in question.

Is there a way to completely reset the chord symbol defaults to factory settings and start fresh?

Many thanks!

On mac, the user>Library (hidden, you’ll need to keep ALT pressed down while checking out the Go To menu in the finder)>Application Support>Steinberg>Dorico 5 folder holds everything that is personal to your Dorico: keycommands, preferences, etc. Move temporarily the userlibrary.xml file to a known directory should revert to the factory defaults…
The library manager is also a very interesting tool, since you can check out what the differences are between your current project and factory settings (or any other file) and import the settings you need. I’d spend some time studying that wonderful tool.

Right, thanks. Is there a way to keep the other preferences and my many custom key commands, etc.?

custom keycommands are in the keycommands_xx.json file where xx is your keyboard language layout. I edited my previous post with the library manager, which should solve your problem, I think.

OK, got it. To clarify, if I move the userlibrary.xml file, custom key commands will still be present?

And yes, the Library Tool is great!

Thanks

yes, the keycommands file is a separate file. I strongly advise anyone to backup this file when you’re happy with your keycommands. It can be shared with other computers, etc…

Removing the userlibrary.xml file has cleared up duplicate Chord Symbol Components and Font Styles nicely - thanks.

My remaining (and more critical question) remains regarding the kerning of Chord Symbol Components and why adjusting the X Offset in the Edit Component dialog doesn’t affect appearance. Thanks

At the moment, there’s no practical way to adjust the kerning of different chord symbol components, but this is something we will address in a future version of Dorico.
