@dspreadbury I have also tried to delete the user.xml file out of my user Library, but to no avail. Attached is a sample template file with dozens of altered chord symbols that I absolutely cannot get rid of and I want to start over now that I understand the program a little better. Any help you can send would be wonderful. many thanks in advance.
I’ve already attempted that and the chords will not disappear off that list to reset. I’m looking for other solutions if possible. Thanks for replying!
I just posted a gif of them all “disappearing” either via Reset or Trash. Can you see that gif? Which ones can’t you remove? I didn’t do all of them, but had no issues with any that I tried.
Sorry Fred I’m on my phone about to head to work and the GIF isn’t coming up.
On my computer (old 2016 Intel Mac running Monterey), no matter how many times I try to use that reset button or the trash (when it lights up) I’m not being able to delete these overrides. I can look later at the GIF when I’m home.
Hi @James_Sampliner, I was able to delete all your overrides. See if opening this file on your system the overrides are gone (if yes then save it as Project Template)
Christian, another question if I may….can you run thru the steps YOU did so I can see if I can replicate those steps on my system. I’m debating whether it’s because I’m on an old MacOS or just my incompetence. Hahahaha.
Clicking on the reset (or the trash icons when active), as @FredGUnn suggested.
Some of the overrides where sticking and after reopening the dialogue or the Project they reappeared (especially some of the all roots ones). I did reset also some of the overrides in the first slot on the right panel (not sure if this helped).
A couple of items keeped reappearing when reopening the dialogue. So I created similar overrides (for example for 7 chord): this misteriously unlocked something [not sure about that] and then I was able to delete the sticky ones (and my manual inserted ones). But possibly resettingt some of the the overrides on the right panel helped too, to remove the few sticky ones…
Another problem is that he created so many manual overrides, that the file is full of chord symbol crud. Taking your “clean” file without any chord symbol overrides, there are still all of these (and more) visible in the Library Manager:
I’m not sure how to restore the 7 though. I have no idea what chord modifications his userlibrary.xml contains either. Honestly, I would just start over. Export the Page Templates from the file, close Dorico, move the userlibrary.xml out of the folder, restart Dorico, create a new project, import the Page Templates, and rebuild the template. Use Engraving Options for all chord symbol edits until you’ve exhausted all the possibilities. Only then go in and make any manual edits at all.
EDIT:
All of these still remain in the “clean” file too:
If I use Library Manager to set Chord Symbol Appearance Components, Glyph Primitives, and Music Symbols back to factory, the “7” will come back. There’s still a lot of other stuff to slowly delete, but at least it might be possible to get a functioning file back.
Yeah, that’s pretty hidden! I’m not 100% sure why some are able to be deleted and some not. I guess if it’s in use in the project or as a default it can’t be deleted, but that wouldn’t explain all of them here.
I can delete some of the 7s but not all:
Maybe … it’s possible to get a working file back, but I really would just start over.
I experimented with the behaviour of the red trash-can for those overrides: the icon of the override you want to delete should not be highlighted to make the trashcan reliably appear. So select one of the no-ovverides icons, and move the mouse over an override: trashcan appears and you can delete the override. Then, after deleting one override, you need to move the mouse on the subsequent or on the previous override (on its upper right corner) so that the trashcan reliably appears. If you try to click on the one under the mouse (after they slide one place because of the deleted one) at some point you activate the selection and when the icon is highlighted no trash can appears, so just over the mouse on the next override icon and the little devilish trashcan will appear every time
Thank you again, @FredGUnn to have revealed this function to me.
EDIT: unfortunately some of the extraneous Glyphs primitives still survived in the Library Manager… Not sure if they are a remain of the previous Chord Symbols overrides, or if they come from other areas. No idea how to annihilate them.
EDIT 2: as @FredGUnn found out there are many more overrides to be cleaned out:
I was gonna ask about both the trash can thing and ALSO the problem in the Library Manager. I’m on my way home and will take a look at stuff you’ve sent back. I truly appreciate the help here. It’s a conundrum bc the don’t that I love for chords doesn’t kern well and I didn’t learn how to use the Chord tool properly before “experimenting”. So ANY help this community gives is more than appreciated.
Also, if I do a hard reinstall of Dorico 6, does that mean that older Dorico files will all be zeroed out for their chord symbols?
FWIK you very seldom need a reinstall. Just deleting items in the Dorico system folder (or the whole folder altogether) should normally reset things. (*)
Possibly some overrides will be present in other older files, if the overrides are project specific (sorry I don’t have an overview right now about what will be saved in the project file itself or what will be saved in the userlibrary.xml file).
But generally I would say that older files are not influenced by a fresh Dorico installation (if I am wrong please someone correct me).
Try to open the files I uploaded (especially the last one), save as Project Template and see how things go.
Just a quick check, but there are some things that can still be deleted. I’m sorta deadlining so can’t check everything, but a bunch of suffix components still have extraneous options.
