Chord symbol parentheses style

Hi,

I was working (unusually for me) with chord symbols in parentheses and know that I can change the style in the properties panel. (Thick, Slender, Slender/Tall). However I can’t find a global option for this. Is there one? And if so, where?

Ta, as always,

P

No, there’s no global option for this because the size of the parentheses is dependent on the size of the chord symbol. The options you can adjust are found in the Parentheses section of the Chord Symbols page of Engraving Options.

Yeah, it was more the ‘style’ of them, rather than the size of them. I get that different chords with different extensions etc would need different size brackets…

Cheers for the reply though @dspreadbury , appreciated as always.

Coming across @Toaster1974’s thread, it occurred to ask whether the team might consider at some point revisiting the behavior of the parentheses lines. I understand the (ahem) point about their size being relative to the chord symbols themselves, @dspreadbury, but have to confess nonetheless that I sometimes find things to be visually jarring:

[Slender/tall setting]

Would some sort of dynamic thickness adjustment relative to height to make greater visual consistency be monstrously challenging to implement?

[EDIT] — FWIW, these are not randomly extracted symbols thrown together to make a point; this is an actual succession of chords in a piece of mine, unfolding in the span of a single measure. I’m thinking that a (more) consistent thickness would be easier to read. (I realize that I can approach that somewhat my making the first triad’s parentheses thick style.)

In this case, the parentheses come from the font, and we don’t stretch font characters in only one dimension: we essentially “increase the point size”, so as they get larger, they get thicker, too. We would need to add more versions of the parentheses to the font, or introduce the ability to scale the font in only one direction, to improve this. Either are a possibility, though I can’t say for sure when we might be able to work on either solution.

Thanks, Daniel — super clear response that makes sense to this rather font-ignorant user.

Not currently at my computer to be able to check, but I’m guessing it’s not (currently) possible to use different fonts for the parentheses.

No, I’m afraid not.
