Chord symbols, position of "sus" and "alt."

Hello Dorico-Folks,

Is there a way to move “sus” and “alt” slightly to the left? (for all roots)

These chord symbols take more space than needed and create a strange bar spacing when there are fast chord changes.

Is there maybe a place where I could globally edit the library?

Thanks a lot!

A preliminary question: are you combining two different fonts , @Johannes.Maas, or is that just one?

Here’s what I see using Petaluma:

“Sus” could potentially be nudged a bit to the left, but it’s certainly not egregious like you’re getting.

“Alt” also looks better, I think.)

Under Engraving Options > Chord Symbols > Design there’s also this bit which should allow you to adjust things:

ADDENDUM: Actually, I just tried adjusting Gap before alterations and got extra space after the “sis,” but could not find how to get less space before it. Hmm…

Thanks for your reply and your time. I’ve made edits to some glyphs.

Yes in this example it is still okay like this. But it would look clumsy if I would change the chord on a quarter note.

Yes, I was also expecting to find an option there, but couldn’t find this specific one…

In general, you can’t alter the kerning (i.e. relative horizontal positions) of individual elements of chord symbols. Dorico does have a table of kerning pairs that it uses, but that table is really designed for the pairing of Academico and Bravura Text, so those values don’t work brilliantly for other fonts, even for Petaluma Script and Petaluma Text.

In future versions of Dorico, we plan both to improve the default kerning of chord symbols using Petaluma, and also to make it possible for you to edit these kerning pairs yourself visually in the application.
