Hi everybody,
I’m trying everything I can think of to get the flutes to condense in this section. They do condense earlier in the movement, and again later, but for some reason not here. Does anyone have a thought about it? Here’s a screenshot, as well as the attached flow:

The first thing I’d do is make sure the dynamics are exactly the same: delete the p for flute 2, and copy it from flute 1 with the rhythmic grid set to quarter note.
Then, try a Condensing Change with manual condensing, and that should work.

A manual condensing works here, either two voices:
or one:
I’ve tried multiple combinations of manual condensing. What options did you choose here?
I definitely did try erasing the flute 2 dynamic, then copying to staff below the p dynamic from flute 1. That didn’t work. Why do I need to set the rhythmic grid to quarter note?
Wow ok! So I think the point that your help brought up is that condensing changes that involve 1 staff going away so the notes can condense onto “the other staff” need to happen at the beginning of the system, not in any other measure. Is that correct? Once I “added” my flute condensing change to the bar 40 condensing change I already had, then it worked!

Indeed! If the condensing change involves removing (or adding, btw) staves, it must be entered at the start of the system.
I wish there was an integrated troubleshooting feature in Dorico. There can be so many reasons for any particular problem, it would be great for a feature that intelligently suggests what the issue could be.
But this forum wouldn’t exist anymore

When copying dynamics like these, I like to set the rhythmic grid to a coarse value, to make sure that I don’t accidentally have dynamics offset by, say, a 16th note. But it’s not necessary, I just like to do it to be careful.

Ok, that’s a great point.
