Condensing Help

What is happening here? I was pretty sure that everything was setup correctly i.e. condensing enabled, etc. in layout options. But, I guess not! Please help. FYI, I’m trying to recreate this score that I bought for our high school band as practice to learn Dorico. Also, I hadn’t noticed this issue until I entered notes in the trumpet part and switched to page view to see the condensed part.

You have a “hard-coded-condensed” score. This is not how Dorico works.

You have to create separate players for 3 clarinets, 2 alto saxophones, 3 trumpets, 2 french horns and 3 trombones. At the moment there is a single(!) 2nd clarinet player doubling clarinet 3.

Ok. What do I do next after I’ve created the separated players? Do I go into the layout options and create custom condensed groups?

No, for example create an empty-handed player (the bottom-left icon), then open the clarinet 2/3 player by clicking on the triangle and drag clarinet 3 into the new empty player. Repeat this for the other players containing multiple instruments.

You need only custom condensed groups if you want to keep instrument families separately (e.g. clarinet 1 and clarinet 2/3).

FYI. This is what I’m trying to recreate.

Yes, but the source in galley view must be each player contains one instrument and Dorico condenses the staves in page view.

Sorry if I’m not understanding, but this is what it looks like now.

Yes, that’s basically correct. But as I said

Create a condensed group for clarinet 2/3 and trumpet 2/3

I really appreciate your help with this! I know that I’ve watched a YT video on this before but about a month ago when I made the switch from FInale and the learning curve is a little bit overwhelming for me. One more thing if you don’t mind, how can I get the trombones staffs to look like the french horn staff when condensed? Thanks again.

You have maybe manually edited the instrument names?

If so you can try to reset the names:

Then the question about 1.2. displayed vertically or horizontally is another topic!

Ha Ha…So simple a fix when you know what you’re doing. Yep! totally what it was and now fixed. Thank you!

As a side note, it looks like you’ve been dragging some staves around in the Staff Spacing tool, which is generally not advised until the musical content (including condensing) is finalised and the Layout Options can’t give you what you need. If you go into the tool again, select any of the little square handles that have turned red and press Delete, they will revert back to their default positions. Or choose Engrave > Staff Spacing > Reset Layout to get all of them at once.

Will do. Thanks. Also, maybe you can help me with this; When in galley view I can add an accidental in parentheses to help with remembering the key but when I see the condensed part in page view it is not visible. Why is that?

Right above the “Properties” panel, check that “Local” property changes are set to apply “Globally”. If it’s set to “Locally”, things like hiding/showing accidentals, text placement, slur adjustments, etc. will only apply to the open layout and not all of the layouts in which that player is present.

I do have it set to “Global” in the properties panel but it still not showing the accidental in page view. Also, is it normal not to be able to click on notes in condensed parts while in page view?

Yes (in Write mode). But you can use Galley view, or modify objects Engrave mode.

Thanks, Janus. I was able to fix the accidental in parentheses issue in Engrave mode.
