Condensing + hiding rests

Hey all,

Hello all - I’m usually really good with workarounds but I have to admit I’m completely stumped in this case.

I’ve been creating these aleatoric boxes with a wavy line to indicate that they continue through several measures. On staves with only one part like the oboe, this is totally fine - I’m using the “set Alpha Channel to 0” workaround to hide the whole rests in the oboe part.

The problem arises when the score is condensed. Even when applied to both flute parts, neither the “Colour” nor “Custom scale” values transfer over to the condensed part, and trying to change these values on the condensed staff using Engrave mode doesn’t work either.

I’m also not able to accomplish this by creating empty measures using “Starts Voice” and “Ends Voice” in both flute parts, either. The condensed part just generates rests anyway.

Are there any workaround gurus that might be able to help?

[Not to get sidetracked, but I am absolutely begging the Dorico devs to add an actual “hide” function to every element!! Using “Starts voice” and “Ends voice” to create empty measures is much too finnicky, it messes with the horizontal spacing and causes all sorts of weird externalities]

You can select rests > Edit > Remove Rests. You can also assign a custom key command to this function.

It won’t help with the note spacing though.

Hi @TaranPlamondon, I was able to fake invisible bar rests for the condensed flutes:

  • write, at the beginning of every of those bars, whole notes or notes that fill the bars (only for the flutes, or for the instruments that will be condensed)
  • select the noteheads in Engrave mode, activate suppress playback, and put the alpha/opacity to 0% (or set the size of the notes to 1%, to avoid remaining stems or rhythm dots, in case of other values than whole notes)
  • they will disappear also if condensed, and note spacing is preserved (also in the parts, where you can just hide noteheads and stems)
  • (for the oboe or non condensing instruments just put the alpha/opacity of rests to 0% as you said)

Dorico file example:
fake empty bars.dorico (549.8 KB)

Very nice!! This works great and breaks the deadlock that was preventing me from finishing this project. Thanks so much!

For measures that aren’t 4/4 I created some funky tuplets to fit a whole note into 2, 3, or 5 beats, otherwise it would leave stems, leger lines and augmentation dots.

Glad it helped

ohhh, that a great idea!!!
