"Condensing"

I selected the “Condense” function on Dorico Pro 6, but it doesn’t condense the woodwinds and the brass in my orchestral score. There are notes placed but still, nothing happens. Can someone please help me understand the reason?

Welcome to the forum, Giovanni. The Condensing functionality is a very complex area of the software, depending on a lot of context, with dozens of settings and many edge cases to consider. Unfortunately, with the limited information you give us it’s impossible to determine what might be the issue. A project file would be most helpful in order for us to be able to help. In the meantime, there are some very comprehensive video tutorials up on Dorico’s Youtube channel, thoroughly recommended.

You need the .dorico file right? If it’s that, I’ll put in the chat

Yes, the quickest way to get help with condensation issues is to share your .dorico file here!

There you go, it’s a rescore for a competition, and I’m running fast to submit since the deadline is tonight!

Ciao @Giovanni_Piacentini, you created all your players as Section Players…

You could convert all of them (apart from the strings) to single player, or activate the Condense adjacent players in Layout Options:

Very quick response: all your players are section players. Which is not usual except for strings.

You can enable condensing for section players in Layout Options, and it will work:

But I would recommend to change them to individual players.

Edit: Ninja’d by @Christian_R!

Now it works! But something else happened: Violin I and Violin II are condensed together and I need them separated, what should I do? Thank you so much!

This one:

Yes, now it works perfectly! Again, thank you so much for your precious help! Have a nice rest of the evening!

You should exclude Violin sections from condensing in the Layout Options.

For future projects, life will be much simpler if you respect Dorico’s logic in Setup…

Physically a Flute Player is a soloist who plays a flute. Two flautists sitting next to each other would be condensed on the score.

A solo player (eg Clarinet) could also hold more than one instrument ( eg. a Bb and A Clarinet) - Dorico will handle the instrument changes for you.

Violin 1 is a section (lots of players playing the same instrument and the same music). Sections can only contain one instrument (Violinists do not also hold Violas) - but they can have many different types of divisi (again Dorico will handle this for you).

These are the general rules - but Dorico does allow you to bend them slightly (as you have discovered) by condensing sections.
