Confused with condensing

I am struggling to get condensing working as I would like. I really tried to follow the explanations in Dorico Help. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. The Dorico file is attached

Questions 1, 2 and 3 are the most important.
Questions 4 – 8 would be nice to solve if possible

1. Bar 9: remove the eighth note rest for oboe 2
2. Bars 12 – 24: Remove condensing for oboe 1 and 2 so they each have separate staves in the full score
3. Bars 40 – 53: Remove condensing for oboe 1 and 2 and clarinet 1 and 2 so they each have separate staves in the full score
4. Bars 25 – 26: Have single stems and beams for the 2 flutes
5. Bars 60 – 61: Have single stems and beams for the 2 flutes
6. Bars 62: Have a single stem for the 2 flutes, and 2 clarinets
7. Bar 62: Have a single stem for the 3 trumpets
8. Bars 25 – 26 Have a single note with a2 in the bassoons

I’ve reordered your questions in the hope the answers make more sense!

Notation Options > Condensing > Minimum length of range of rests to allow hiding (down the bottom)

Dorico will condense any music between two rests in the same way - if you have contrapuntal music that ends in unison, the unison note will still be in two voices.

Take your Bassoons at b25-27:

  • Bsn 2 enters playing f

  • Because Bsn 1 doesn’t have a dynamic marking, they need to be notated in a separate voices

  • In b27, they play the same rhythm with the same dynamic marking

  • Normally this would condense into one voice but because they are part of a phrase that needs to use two voices, they also use two voices

What you need to do is “reset” the condensing calculations, and you do this by adding a Condensing Change at beat 1 of bar 27.

Select an item at that rhythmic position > Add Condensing Change > Tick the Bassoons

You need to follow the same steps as above but go further and actually tell Dorico how you specifically want it condensed (Manual Condensing):

You will need to reset this wherever you want Dorico to make decisions again (i.e. at the end of that phrase?).

Here is your project with all this done. Let me know if I have missed anything!

EDIT: When manually condensing, I could have just selected No Condensing but I wanted to show that you can do it however you like.

Hi Daniel Thank you so much for helping me. I really appreciate your help.

Hi Daniel Again thank you. I inserted a system break at bar 28. When I do so the oboe condensing change no longer work from bars 40 - 43. It starts working again at bar 44. I cannot figure out why since the condensing change prior to bar 40 is still correct. Dorico file version 3 attached.

Condensing changes that involve a change in the number of staves must be placed at the start of a system in order to take effect. So here, you need to move your condensing change of bar 38 to bar 37.

You don’t need to remove and recreate it. In Write Mode, you can select it and use Alt/Opt+Left Arrow until the CS reaches the beginning of the system.

thank you Charles
