Confusing extra rests above single player

I’m new to Dorico and I thought all was well with note entry, but I’m now getting extra whole bar rests floating above the notes. Sometimes.

In the top, piccolo, part all is well. In the bottom, flute, part bars 2-6 have these extra rests. I have also noticed that if I select a note, say the top D in bar 2, the bar at the bottom shows ‘Note: D6 [86] (Down-stem Voice 1)’ and when I select the floating rest it shows 'Rest (Up-stem Voice 1).
What’s going on and how do I revert to the stem direction, and associated slurs etc, being dependent on just the pitch as in bar 8+ in my example?
Thanks

As you have worked out, you have used more than one voice on the staff, so Dorico shows the the rests for the resting voice.

The simplest route to remove them is to change the voice (select the notes and hit V).

View > note and rest colours is helpful here.

Under that menu option you have the ability to turn on colours for the different voices so you can see what’s happened.

@Janus, Bingo! All is resolved. I wasn’t aware that I had used more than one voice particularly as the message at the bottom of the screen says both rests and notes were Voice 1.
Thank you for your speedy help.

That’s a good tip, @RichardTownsend. Now my score is lit up like a veritable Christmas tree!!

Up-stem and Down-stem voices are numbered separately. So down-stem voice 1 is, in most cases, the 2nd active voice on a staff, because up-stem voice 1 is usually the first active voice.

Dorico can be very flexible with voices: there’s no limit to the number of voices you can have on any given staff.
