Confusion with slur and tie

I’m having a small problem, but it’s very weird. I have the last two bars of a piece (bass guitar) that look like this:

You can see that the slur from the eighth not D to the dotted quarter C is just fine. But then when I try to create a tie from the dotted quarter C to the whole note C, I get this:

I don’t think I’m doing anything weird. In both cases I just select the notes and the click on the slur or the tie.

Any help would be appreciated.

I’m assuming you want the slur to end on the dotted quarter C. To get this to happen, select the slur and then open the properties panel. In the properties panel, you’ll see options for both the start and end positions of the slur. You can set these options on a project wide basis in engraving options.

This is perfectly normal behaviour. If you prefer you can change the slur property to end the slur as per your first picture…

To have this as default for all slurs into ties, change the Engraving Option.

This may be normal behavior, but it seems wrong. Slurs and ties look the same, but aren’t they functionally different?

Yes, of course they are different. But that’s not at issue.

The question is whether you prefer the slur to end at the start or the end of the tied notes. I think most modern engraving style guides suggest slurring to the end (and from the beginning) of ties. But feel free to choose a different default.

Ah. Stated that way, I see why this happens. Thanks for clearing this up.

If you want the default behaviour to be different, then change the Engraving Options, not the individual Properties.
