Hello everyone,
while I regard buying Cubase as a massive mistake due to all the bugs I encountered that Steinberg doesn’t have any incentive to fix, I feel VST Live is much more flexible in terms such as MIDI bindings (the keyboard shortcut editor also allows MIDI learn functionality for MIDI controllers, so each keyboard shortcut can also be mapped to a MIDI controller) and the developer team actually listens and responds here.
That’s cool
Still, I don’t want to purchase it yet since I couldn’t figure out a few things:
-
Is it somehow possible to add permanent sustain? (e.g. simulate a continuously pressed down pedal) In Cubase this is doable using the Input Transformer, but the process is all but intuitive and apparently only works if I use Mod Wheel as Sustain controller (or at least I couldn’t figure out how to map a value > 64 to a button).
-
Is it possible to use MIDI learn on VSTs? (I assume yes, but what’s the purpose of the dedicated knobs in the Plug-in Panel then?)
-
Even so, MIDI learn through the VST UI never worked for me in Kontakt (Noire Piano) on my Launchkey 88 MK3. This is a known problem with Launchkey apparently, which can only be worked around with by using the Quick Controls in Cubase.
In VST Live we have these 8 pre-defined Plug-In knobs in the left panel as alternative to Quick Controls I assume, but I cannot pick arbitrary VST parameters from the whole list of available functions a given VST offers?
This means opening the VST’s UI and using Midi Learn is the only option of mapping VST parameters to midi controllers? There is no ‘generic VST Editor’ as there is in Cubase?
If so, that would render usage of my Launchkey near impossible, since Quick Controls and the generic editor were the only ways I had to map its knobs to Kontakt’s Noire Piano.
