Consolidate unmetered "measures" for resting players

Hi Everyone! New Dorico user from the whole Finale “Funale” business. I am enjoying it so far. Just finished my first piece for concert band and I think it went faster than it would have if I’d done it in that other program I used for 20 years…

Anyway, my piece, which is a Hanukkah Celebratory Suite based on Yiddish music and klezmer has a section in the middle that is a klezmer rubato piece called a doina. I used Dorico’s cool unmetered space to write it out and dotted bar lines to separate different phrases. Only a few instruments in the band play this section, but Dorico does not consolidate the empty space for any of the other players. I’ve formatted parts for now that deal with it ok (deadlines) but is there a way to get the program to consolidate these empty bars either into a multimeasure rest-like graphic, or into some kind of other tacet solution? (it’s all one flow)

Here’s an example of what it looks like now (letter G):

Thank you!

Dan Blacksberg

When one adds bar lines to an unmetered section, the bar lines (I suspect) count as content in the measure, so it will not collapse into a multi-measure rest: first , because in one since it is just one measure and second because the added dashed barlines are content.

You should probably think bout adding cues for the non-playing instruments: it might save some rehearsal time.

Wouldn’t ya know @Dan.Blacksberg that I passed through today looking for the same solutions for unmetered doina solutions - kale bazetsn in this case but same diff. (lol).

For sure same notational issues! I ended up using dotted bar lines. It made for not the best formatting in the other parts as I never figured out how to make parts for instruments who weren’t playing into multimeasure rests or whole tacet sections, but it was only 8 “measures” so it wasn’t a nuisance for anyone. Hope you find a good solution!
