a heads-up:
I installed Cubase 15 on my first system and tweaked a few things (e.g. Plugin-collection, track header etc). As usual, I exported an updated Profile.srf and imported it to my second system which I had updated to Cubase 15 as well in the meantime.
After importing the newly created C15 profile to my second setup all sorts of things went missing and were defaulted to their factory state: plugin collections, ControlRoom presets and its connections, metering presets as well as other items. Key commands and other profile content, on the other hand, were correctly transferred.
First observations (Windows 10/11)
The ControlRoomPreset.pxml file does no longer exist in Cubase 14 (formerly found in
C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 14_64\Presets).
It was replaced for html files which reside here:
C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 15_64\Presets\ControlRoom
Workaround:
I went back to an old Cubase 14 profile.srf on the second system which was transferred by Cubase 15 during its installation. All items were correctly identified. Only now, the new default.html in Cubase 15_64\Presets\ControlRoom was updated and additional Control Room presets were correctly extracted and saved as separate html files as well. Plugin collections and all presets were restored as well. Afterwards, I manually added the latest changes from the first system.
Conclusion:
Exchanging profiles between Cubase 14/15 or Cubase 15/15 seem to have undergone a few changes we don’t know about. Maybe parts of the profile content are now separated from the srf files and references have been updated, too. Unfortunately, there is no documentation to be found in the manual.
The good news: If you stay on a single system and open an old profile which has been transferred from a previous Cubase installation – that works perfectly well. Transferring profiles between two Cubase 14/15 or 15/15 systems on the other hand need further investigation.
Transferring profiles between systems is something I heavily relied on in the past. Hopefully, Steinberg’s documenation team will be able catch up at some point.
Upgraded from Cubase 14 to 15 and profile was blank, back to default. Went into Cubase 24 and its profile was erased. Long hours of customization for many controllers lost. Sad and mad.
Is there a way to get them back? Mac Studio M2max, the newer OS.
first of all: Yes, as long as Cubase 14 is still on your system it should be doable.
Have you actively created a profile in Cubase 14? If you didn’t then there will be no profile to draw from. Usually, your preferences should have automatically being transferred to C15 during the update - with or without profiles. Apparently, this didn’t work out in your case.
What I would do: Open Cubase 14 and create a profile following this instruction.
Afterwards, import this new profile to C15. You will notice, that your control room presets will not be transferred properly as I described above. However, that’s a one time thing once the new file structure is established. I am still connecting the dots how the new profile.xml interacts with Control Room presets but I am almost there.
First, try this way and see if anything is missing. If this shouldn’t work - I very much expect it does - please, list the preferences that are missing. There are other ways to restore them, too. Not as elegant as the profile functionality but it’s still doable.
I have every part of Cubase customized with my own settings that in each possible part like metering, display menus, preferences, I/o, CR, color settings. . . . BUT, didn’t create a recent global PROFILE which I know now I have to . . it saves the customization of the midi remote devices . . . . right?
So it seems the last one was replaced by this new default one when upgrading….. so, my fault, my bad…
I believe that’s something that Cubase should backup (Profile) from time to time (at least, give us an option to check or uncheck for that end)…. without us stressing for one more thing to backUp manually. That way, specially when upgrading, I would already have the option to chose from backup Profiles too….
On the bright side, I have everything else *including custom Shortcuts and Macros saved. . . . so, I’ll just reprogram my midi devices (*several pages per device in some cases)… a few beers and good music, I even might have some fun remembering what the setup was doing one or other changes that I anyway, had coming.
Question> if I had saved the Profile, in that file is everything else that’s been customized?// shortcuts, macros, spaces, windows. . . . (if so, then I will only be saving new profiles from time to time)
Profiles cover pretty much everything from your lists apart from I/O and ControlRoom presets. Profiles are my preferred way to backup the majority of customizations on my end. I love this feature.
However, keep in mind that there are also other things Profiles don’t cover like VST3 presets, MIDI Remote Scripts or MediaBay Ratings.
Usually, everything should have been automatically imported during the update - worked just fine here. No idea what went wrong in your case, but I am not familiar with Mac so I am of little help in that department.
Your MIDI Remote scripts should still be where you’ve left them before you updated. Have you tried to load them?
The default location is here on a Mac:
Users//Documents/Steinberg/Cubase/MIDI Remote
Everything is perfect, the scripts, the I/o, all the settings logical editor (macros), shortcuts…. except the configuration of the midi remote scripted midi controllers.
This weekend I’ll be programming the controllers and from now on, I’ll be creating backup files from the profile manager from time to time (which I haven’t needed in the last 3 upgrades)
