Just wandering if it is possible to assign the control room level knob to an external device, either MIDI or USB.

Yes you can use the generic device to assign the knob.
Depending on what controller you use, you should be aware of that it can be a bit jumpy.
Here’s a screen shot of my simple setup which allows me to control monitor volume and a few other things. Works great with my Korg nanoKontrol2.
