Controlling Modulation with Pedal

Hello, I would like to control modulation CC 1 with my Boss WL 1 footswitch. I already use one button the switch to move between song parts so thought it would be relatively straight forward.

I accessed ‘actions & shortcuts’, went to layer to set up but there is no specific link to modulation. There is mute, volume, pan etc

I thought that a ‘Quick’ control may be the way forward but cannot find a way to remap or change a given control.

I’m very much a novice, sorry. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello @timj63 !

Assuming you’re using a controller keyboard…

You can set up an action to control a QC in the Layers tab but you’ve probably already noticed that it will be targeted at only the current or a single layer.

Maybe better to send your pedal to a virtual midi channel and then use that as the input to one or more layers - obviously you’ll need to configure your keyboard to the same virtual midi channel.

Another option is to connect your pedal to your keyboard and control it instead which would probably be the easier method.

Hi Clive. I am using a controller keyboard.

I don’t mind that it is targeted at one layer as that would usually be an organ and i’m switching the Leslie on and off with the mod wheel (CC 1). In some instances, my hands are occupied so I need a footswitch.

I just need to know how to configure a Quick command to CC 1.

Actions/shortcuts, Layer tab. Add an action using + button, adjust to suit

I appreciate your patience….

I am selecting layer - add - Quick1.

I then press learn and tap the button on my footswitch (it is actually set to CC 82 on the pedal itself but I can change that).

Data 1 From and Data 1 To now show Gen Purp 7.

If I change these to ‘modulation’, nothing happens.

Other actions such as ‘mute’ or ‘volume’ do work OK.

Is modulation programmed in the layer? Have a look in the midi monitor and see what the pedal’s actually sending

..and no worries…

Hi Clive. The midi monitor for the pedal is showing:

For the layer controller, I now have Quick Control pointing to ‘modulation’ ( didn’t have this before.

Controller maps shows this:

And layer action shows this:

You have your layer action sending to the selected layer, could that be the problem? Im guessing you would have to always have layers open and manually select your target. Can’t see that working well live.

In any case - is the correct layer selected?

Ok - I didn’t think of the obvious question first…

Your layer input is your keyboard?

Hi Clive, yes the selected layer is correct. You can also choose between layer 1 to 8 which is fine.

I changed the pedal to send CC1 (took a bit of doing as the firmware had to be updated. However, I still get the same result. A bit of study reveals that it just mutes the layer regardless of mapping.

I have now noted that Quick Control affects the quick controls on the VST. In this case Halion 7, Model C organ. S1 is set to mute.

I am now looking to change this to leslie speed/modulation. There’s a lot and not found it yet but in the process. Does this sound correct?

For a switch I would think slow/fast is the better choice.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t one but I did find Modulation (there are hundreds). It works but it also raises the volume as well. Think I need to study VST quick controls a little.

Thanks for your help.

Not sure I did much. Just had a look at Halion (don’t use it) and that thing is deep! I did see Rotary Bypass in the assignments - do you have that?

No, but I’ll take a look. I switched to using IK Multimedia B3X organ VST and it has a fast/slow which works great.

The only settings are to use the actions/shortcuts to set up the pedal.

However, switching it on also maximises the volume on the layer itself (slider) so I need to have a dig and see how that is triggered.
