I am under the impression that the latest versions of Finale have better .mus to MusicXML conversion than my faded Finale 2012. I have Dorico 4.
Is it true that I can give all my Finale 2012 files over to someone who has Dolet/Finale 27 and this is the best way for me to get all my old Finale files converted to MusicXML for import to Dorico? I don’t think I have the hardware to run Finale 27 myself
If anyone wants some paid work to do this for me, send me a PM.
Thanks, I just tried to install Dolet and got an error message.
‘Dolet 7 for Finale setup ended prematurely because of an error’
First I saw a pop-up saying that Java 32 bit has to be installed. I have 64 bit so I’m trying to figure out of it actually has to be 32 bit as opposed to 64 bit.
So yes, I see that Dolet works with Finale 2011 or later. Technically it should work with my 2012 install assuming my hardware is up to spec.
I’d still likely pay someone to do it. Also I still suspect that doing it with Dolet7/Finale 2012 is not as good as Dolet7/Finale v27
Oh well, it was worth a test. MM have tech support still available if you want to contact them, at least they would know about Dolet7 with v27 and 2012.
Well, I had someone take my F 2012 files, run them through F 27, and then export them from F 27 as Music XML. I updated my Dorico install to 5 and tried to import the MusicXML 4.0 files into Dorico. Not a great result unfortunately but it’s nothing to do with Dorico, we expected this. Onward we go.
I downloaded the Dolet 7 and installed it into my plugins on Finale 2012, still unable to convert to MusicXML. I have iOS 10.14.6 which should have been compatible according to the instructions. Suggestions appreciated.
They still have their Tech support available so you could try asking them directly. I have contacted their Tech support about something else, and got a reply (surprisingly) in a few days.
Thanks for suggestion to get Tech support. Finale 2012 is a “Legacy Version” and is not supported. I already tried to submit a question to them about converting and was referred via an email (with my support ticket number) to a help center or a community forum. Help center led me to the Dolet plugin download which didn’t work, and here I am at various community supports. I don’t anticipate a reply back from their Tech support.
So you can’t export MusicXML at all from Finale 2012? That’s strange because I can. When I tried to install Dolet I got a Java version error. I’m not savvy enough to know whether your method of installing Dolet (installing the ‘plug-in’) is the same as the way I tried (just clicking download from Dolet page). I assume that what I did was also attempting to install a plug-in.
In any case, just so you have the information, I have exported MusicXML straight from Finale 2012 so it can definitely be done
So glad it worked for you, however not for me. Did not get an error report. Downloaded app, dragging it in to the File folder shown on screen for Finale 2012, rebooted everything. MusicXML shows up in the plug in menu and also in file/export/ MusicXML, but nothing happens.Yes, downloaded from Finale site.
What did you do when you got the Java version error?
I actually contacted someone who has Dolet working with Finale 27 and had him import my 2012 files into F 27, then export MusicXML, thus taking advantage of the MusicXML 4.0. At first it doesn’t seem to make much difference in terms of the quality of formatting I get but I haven’t tried all the tips and tricks to get the XML files to display optimally. I’m back at home next week so I’ll be trying.
That’s very strange that simply File–>Export–>MusicXML isn’t working
Did you email your files to your person with F 27 or transport them another way? Could your get your files back on your computer and open them in your own version of Dorico yet?
I zipped them up and emailed them to him. He converted them and sent me a Dropbox link. I opened them in Dorico but they didn’t look much different than the XML output from Finale 2012 opened in Dorico. Again, though, I haven’t tried many of the tricks people have been mentioning that may help optimize XML import. I’ll try them when I get back home from travelling.
