Converting instrument tracks to audio Cubase 12

I have been trying to record a simple instrument track to an audio track in Cubase 12 pro. I have followed suggestions on the forums including creating a group track and routing to an audio track input (which doesn’t work because there is no option for the group track to be selected as input for the audio track), render in place (which doesn’t work because no audio file image or sound comes up), and by just playing the instrument track with audio track input from stereo input as I have been able to do with MIDI tracks. None of these have worked. I understand that there has been a bug reported with Cubase 12 in this regard, but seriously? Any suggestions? And why on earth does the company keep focusing on new functions with each upgrade rather than making sure us loyal customers can do the most basic operations more easily without running into problems like this?

A simple fix for this problem would be to set up a single dropdown “convert to audio” tab that would automatically set everything up so that users could just play the track in real time to record it. Do the developers ever really consider things like this or is it just a waste of time recommending anything?

Hi Richard.

This should work, I’ve never had the issue you’ve described.

Have you routed the Instrument track’s Output to the Group Track?

Then, on the Audio Track, select the Group Track as the Input Source?

I’m on Cubase Pro 12 and have no issues with Render in Place, which is my preferred way of rendering instrument tracks to audio.
If you could describe in detail (a step-by-step would be the best) how this does not work for you and include some screenshots, I’m sure we can get this working for you.

With C13 there is also a new method to record midi to audio.

Hi Prim_69,

Thanks so much for your prompt and helpful response. I hadn’t seen any instruction to make the output from the instrument track set to the group track mentioned anywhere, so I had been routing the instrument output to master. Changing the output to the group track worked. I really appreciate your help with yet another frustrating roadblock with Cubase. I still hope that someday the developers will focus on simplifying the experience…

Best regards,
RK

Hi mlib,

Thank you for your prompt and helpful response. I managed to fix the routing problem by making the instrument output go to the group track, allowing me to record the instrument track to audio in real time. I then tried the render in place method which now worked as well. Not sure if I understand why, but as long as it works now…

I really appreciate your help and offer to review screenshots, etc.

Best regards,
RK

Hi GP,

Thanks for sending this. I’ll check out the video. I’m still reluctant to upgrade to 13 at this point. All new versions have caused more frustration in the past, making it harder to do the simplest things. I’m guessing that 13 won’t change the track record.

Best regards,
RK

@Richard_Kass.

More than welcome.

Good Luck.

With your stated objectives, there should be no reason to update. Render In Place is a very old feature.

I would suggest learning what issues you have at the moment.

The video link is simply a new method in C13 to achieve a very old and common objective. Actually, it might be the most common question in the last decade…“how do I convert midi to audio?”
