Copying from one project and pasting into another one

… hangs Dorico every time. I select all staves and content in one project, then select the first bar in another (empty) project and paste, at which point Dorico hangs and I have to exit the program via Task Manager. They are not extremely large segments. When I copy only one staff and a few (maybe 20 or so) measures, it worked. Does this have something to do with RAM? (have 32GB).

Are there enough staves for the music? You’re just copy and pasting “the stuff on the staves”, not the staves themselves.

E.g. you can’t use Paste to add an orchestra to a project with just a piano.

exactly the same number of staves and same instruments

I can’t reproduce the problem here. Do both projects have audio activated?

yes, but I doubt that sound would cause these problems. I was copying from another project which was an mxl import from Finale. When I imported the mxl into the same (empty template) project, as another flow, then I could copy and insert. But mxl importing doesn’t seem to work very well, lots of things to fix, basically a real hassle , sorry to say …

You know you can import Dorico flows from any project file into any other Dorico project file?

I think we really need to see the XML file or the project you’re copying from, to test exactly what’s going on.

yes, I imported a flow from another project (rather than copying content), and that seems to work
thanks for looking into it

If you switch between Dorico projects windows that have both the Activate project ON (blue color), then Dorico, on each switch, (re)loads the sounds for the project that is currently on the front. This requires some time, and if you paste also items while he is doing the loading, this can be suboptimal.
For this reason it is suggested to leave only one (or no) Project activated during copy-pasting of items between projects, to avoid the (re)loading of the sounds (just click on the Blue icon to turn it OFF).

There are also Preferences to decide what happens when you open multiple projects:
