Cpu Overload In Small Projects Since Updating To 10.5

Okay, been struggling with this for weeks since 10.5.
This PC SETUP is what fixed it for me today. Just spent 3 hours working on a project with 37 (!) tracks in it, all big orchestral library instruments. So real CPU and RAM eaters. Not a single blip, peep or spike anymore. Here’s the sequence of things I did:

  1. In your BIOS, make sure you are NOT overclocking your CPU. Switch that off if you are.
  2. In my PC hyper-threading is also “on”. I tried switching hyper-threading off but then it got worse, so I left that as it was.
  3. Disable all audio drivers other than the one you use for your DAW. In my case I had drivers for sound that was built-in in my screens, so I disabled that in Windows Control Panel. Very important! You have to do this. Some sound drivers get confused, depending on the brand.
  4. In Cubase under Studio Setup, I kept ASIO Guard “on” and switched it to “high”. That already gave the CPU more oxygen.
  5. In the same setting, I switched my audio buffer from 128 to 512. In combination with the ASIO Guard “high” you won’t get a latency higher than 23ms, which is perfectly fine. You can even try 1024. It works fine for me. The latency is never higher than 40ms. Which is nothing, really.
  6. Restarted Cubase.
  7. Fixed.

I use an external Focusrite Scarlett soundcard, with its own ASIO drivers.
My PC runs Win10 with an Intel i7 and 64Gb RAM.
VST3 is on and everything.
I checked the compatibility with the video card, but that was never the issue.

I’m under the impression not all fixes are the same for everyone. This worked for me. Hope it helps someone here in the community. In any case, not too impressed with Cubase 10.5. What a mess.
