CPU spikes when something graphics-wise happens?

Since the latest update, whenever I pan or zoom the screen, or some animation is happening in a synth AU, I get crackles. I notice that the CPU/DSP meeting is spinking quite a bit when “graphics things” are happening. Didn’t notice this until the latest update.
Anyone else?
I probably notice it more since my iPad is old (12.9 Pro 1st gen)

Hi @mcmillan.jon

Thanks for your message.

If I’m correct, the iPad Pro 12.9" 1st Gen has been released back in 2015, and therefore the device is already a few years old. Nevertheless it should work to run Cubasis with it.

Here are a few things to check:

  • Please give it a try choosing a higher latency value (located under “Setup/Audio”).
  • Check if enabling/disabling “Multi-core Processing” (located under “Setup/Audio”) improve the overall handling and performance.
  • Avoid using CPU-hungry effects and/or instruments or use “Track Freeze” where feasible.
  • Use “Send Effects” on several tracks (instead of using “Insert Effects” on every track).

Hope that helps!

Best,
Lars

A short clip. New project, no AUs, no MIDI or audio clips. You can see the CPU meter spiking as I pan, scroll, add clips, etc. Add some tracks with AUs, FX and you get stuttering and crackling playback when panning/zooming, opening AU UIs to edit things.
Not really useable on my old iPad. Maybe a device with a better CPU will not have stuttering and crackles because there would be more CPU to “soak up” these spikes.

As far as I know, this is new behavior in the latest update.

The solutions you gave are great general CPU saving tips, but I think don’t apply here as the spike are cause by UI changes and not audio events.

Hi @mcmillan.jon

Thanks for your feedback, which has been discussed with our engineering.

The CPU usage of various touch gestures (scrolling, zooming) is unrelated to any crackling you might experience during playback. Crackling is caused by the DSP usage reaching 100%, which can happen even if CPU usage is well below 100%.

Let’s focus on the crackling you experience. We test on an iPad Pro 12.9” 1st gen with iOS 16.7.10 and have not noticed any decrement in performance since the release of Cubasis 3.0. Our test projects with 10-15 AU plug-ins play without crackling as long as multi-core is enabled (with default guard buffer) and latency is set to a reasonable (5-10ms) value. Can you post a screenshot of your Setup / Audio page, and a video of the crackling? Or even better, send me a project via pm where crackling occurs?

We look forward to hear from you.

Best.
Lars

Hi Lars,
Thanks for your and the team’s support! I will send you the project a little later when I get back to my iPad. I believe my audio settings are 10.7ms and High buffer on the multicore processing.

Hi Lars,
I had deleted the offending project since it was just noodling around a bit with a new AU synth I bought. I opened an older project to finish and didn’t have any issue except when first open the UI of a synth while the project was playing, I would get a single “pop”, I guess meaning a cpu spike when the UI opens. No real problem while the song was playing and not opening anything. The project is 7 tracks, 5 of which are Decent Sampler, 1 Pure Upright piano track, and 1 is Synthmaster 2. There is 1 AU, TB Reverb, on a send effect.

I’m going to put this concern on hold until I run across it again if I make a more “CPU taxing” song. As already mentioned, my iPad is quite old

Thanks!

I spoke too soon :frowning:
I bounce the project described above to audio. Now there are 7 audio tracks with no insert FX, and 1 send effect.
Here is the result and what I was trying to describe in the original post.:

Edit: when I increase the buffer to 42ms it helps a lot. Also increasing multi core buffer helps. Maybe my iPad is too old!

Hi @mcmillan.jon

Thanks for the update, which has been reviewed alongside with our engineering.

The upcoming Cubasis update will resolve the crackling issue that appears when zooming or scrolling large audio events in the arranger.

However do not expect a solution for the issue that appears when resizing the user interfaces of AU plug-ins, which require a newer more powerful iPad.

Best,
Lars

Sounds good. Thank you for looking into it!
Unfortunately, I’ll have to switch to my iPhone for music stuff
