Crash deleted .bak files

Just had a weird crash of Nuendo with the dialog box that I couldn’t do something and it was unresponsive. Save-as and Save both failed. When using “Save” it said it would write a new project file and leave the original intact.

In the folder with the project I could see the original .npr from 11:47PM, and I could see the latest .bak files, several created at around 02:40AM.

Once I quit Nuendo all those .bak files got deleted!

Has anyone seen this before? It seems like a very, very strange behavior if Nuendo decides to delete the backup files after a crash. Surely that shouldn’t be an automatic function in any situation.

Definitely not… No crash log too? Do you remember what the dialog box referred to? (if there’s a hint there)

had something similar a couple of years back. Had a Project get corrucpted somehow and when quitting Nuendo asked me if I wanted to save. I saw those bak files and thought “nah… gonna open one of the bak files and work on those.” Afte quitting without saving all bak files until the last save got deleted. Looks like this is by design.
Maybe this is something similar and Nuendo did not get the flag right, that the original project should be saved.

Where do I find it?

The dialog box that came up first was the one saying something along the lines of a serious error having occurred and that you should save/rename and restart. But then on save and save-as I got new dialog boxes saying in one case that save wasn’t possible because the project was corrupt and that instead there would be an automatic save-as and the original would be left intact - that didn’t work and it led to the same box that I would get if I used save-as directly which said something like it just couldn’t do it because the project was corrupt.

Now I know to copy/past the .bak files into a separate folder for additional backing up I guess. I’m still fuming over this. I expected to lose whatever time is between each .bak creation, not hours, not hours I should have been sleeping.

I just got the error again and am now capturing this as it crashes.

This was a different project from last night btw. And the project folder didn’t end up with files that were subsequently deleted… rebooting…
