Create separate transposed layout

Hi,

I need to create a lead sheet “In Bb” of an existing score I have just notated in C. For no particular Bb instrument, so I just want a generic transposed part.

I have followed this exact procedure which is actually exactly what I need to achieve:

Unfortunately nothing happens. The new layout is still in D major as was the original layout, and no change whatsoever occurred.

Can you tell me if there might be something I have missed out?

Thanks a lot

Hi,

It’s really difficult to say without the file, but check in Layout Options > Players that Transposing Layout is ticked (with the Layout selected in the RH column).

Hi and thanks,

I managed to make it work, as in the new transposing layout I had it set as displaying the Concert version as well, and not the transposing one.

So now that is sorted, however I have another issue:

Is there a way of changing the enharmonic spelling independently between the Concert and transposing layouts I have? I have carefully respelled all the accidentals in the Bb score to make it more readable, only to find out that those accidentals were changed in the C score as well. I need to tweak them accordingly.

Thanks again

If one of them is a Score and the other one is a Part, or if both are Parts, that’s easy. If both are Score, good question…

Edit: I just tried with two Scores, I can’t manage it. You could create a Part Layout instead, and then it would work.

Yep they are both scores, as they are a jazz lead sheet with some added details with ossia staves etc etc…I believe there should be a way to achieve this as this is pretty common to do…

so I’ll try with a part layout, how would I go about doing that?

In Setup Mode, in the very lower right corner, click onto the little music stand icon.
This will create a part layout.
Select the newly created layout at the right list, right-click and select all players you have, as in your full score.
You might want to tweak that layout via the Layout Option, so it resembles a score. For example, adding the players’ names at the beginning of the systems, adjusting the raster size to something similar in your score, and so on.

Adding to @k_b’s suggestions:

In Layout Options > Page Setup > Page Template, you can assign the Default Full Score Page Template Set to your Part layout.
Also, you can use the Library Manager: import another of your projects as a reference, select Layout Options (left column), choose the Full Score in the right-hand document and your new Part in the left-hand document, and then import the options.

Fantastic, I had never seen that option.
Thanks Charles!

Thank you all.

What I meant is how do I go about keeping the enharmonic spelling of notes and chords to my liking independently one from the other?

Presumably, if one changes a note enharmonically in a part layout, it will not propagate to the score.

is there any way to turn an existing score layout into a part layout?

It should be possible, as described here, just the other way round:

In this example I’m only changing the page template. If you want the score to become exactly like a part, including the template but also all the other options, you can use the Library Manager. For the options to transfer, you can choose between the factory settings, your saved settings (“User Library”), or another of your own projects.

However, I think that for a few “deeper” options — such as spelling propagation — it remains a Score, and I’m not sure it can be changed.
