When the caret is active, it’s possible to create a new slash voice with the command Shift+Alt/Opt+V, beginning with Up-stem Slashed Voice 1.
When the caret isn’t active, it’s also possible to convert any selected notes into a new slash voice with the same command, except Dorico automatically creates Down-stem Slashed Voice 1 rather than Up-stem Slashed Voice 1
Is there a particular reason for this?
NB I have the key command for Create Slash Voice set to Shift+Alt/Opt+V. I can’t remember if this is default or if I’ve set it for consistency.
I don’t recall whether we consciously decided this, but taking a quick look at the code, I can see that Dorico is explicitly choosing a voice direction opposite to the current voice direction. It arguably doesn’t need to do this when creating a slash voice, but it’s helpful when moving from one “normal” voice to another.
Thanks for the reply, Daniel.
In my opinion, if there is no existing slash voice then I think it would be more logical to have it default to an Up-stem voice first. This would also align with how it works during Note Input.
What are your thoughts?
I don’t disagree, but it’s also not something that we’re likely to revisit in the near future.
