Creating a Lay Back Feel in Jazz - Playback with Dorico

Hello dear Dorico users and friends,

I’m working on a jazz arrangement and in a specific passage, I’m writing the expression “Lay Back”. I would like to know if it is possible to execute it through Dorico’s playback feature.

Thank you in advance for any help or guidance you may offer.

Sincerely, Ricardo Teles.

When you say “laid back”, what precisely do you want to achieve? Do you want the music to feel a little behind the beat? You can use the “played durations” mode in the Key Editor to adjust the start position of all of the notes a little, perhaps, but there’s no built-in one-click solution to change the timing of playback in this way.

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for your message. By “Lay Back” in jazz, I’m referring to a playing technique where the musician slightly delays the timing of the notes, creating a relaxed and behind-the-beat feel. I was hoping to achieve a similar effect in Dorico’s playback.

Thank you for your suggestion to use the “played durations” mode in the Key Editor to adjust the start position of the notes. I’ll give it a try and let you know if I have any further questions.

Best regards,
Ricardo Teles
