Creating a legible landscape score for big band

I want to create a score in landscape, but I can’t figure out how to resize the notes etc to be legible. The portrait score works but has too few bars per page.

Go into Library > Layout Options > Page Setup and set the page size to something bigger or the space size to something smaller.

Dorico doesn’t know which you want to do, so it won’t do it for you automatically.

I’d suggest to adjust the rastral setting in Layout Options to a higher value (=smaller staff size). ⌘⇧L on Mac or Ctrl-Shift-L on Windows, then Page Setup → Space size. It’s one of the core settings for any layout.

Working towards creating a landscape score and the brass staves bar lines disappeared in the scores first page. Thoughts?

Well my first thought is a flash back to how many times I have had some bar lines selected unintentionally as I selected and deleted something else. And so bar lines get deleted but I didn’t notice at the time. I can’t say for sure for you, but I’ve caught myself in the act of doing that very thing. At least they are easy to put back.

I tried the barlines pallet to no avail. Is there another way?

The trick is to be in the right spot. Go to the first rest in your section that has missing barlines and select it. Press Enter or Shift+n to get into note entry mode. Now move to the beat position of the first note where the barline should be. - to the first beat of the next measure if the barline were there. ( it is easiest to see if you set your note division in the drop down in the lower left corner of Dorico to something like a quarter note, or even a whole note for 4/4) And now go to your pallet and select the single bar line., or use the shift-B popover and type | to get a single bar line.

I think it will probably fill in all your missing bar lines for that section of the stave with that one action, but it might depend on how you deleted the group of them , not sure. Anyway, if you need to enter more bar lines the process is the same. Be in note entry so that you can move to the right spot, and then you can enter the bar line. And if so, usually a whole etc as the note division would make it simplest to move where you need to.

It looks like you’ve lost the bracket for the brass section somehow. I’d check for Bracket and Barline Change signposts.

This looks like there are some brackets that have their endpoints reversed (top staff below bottom staff) either because of a rogue manual override or some manual staff spacing that doesn’t make sense anymore.

Thanks for the advice, but I tried adding the barlines as described above without success. Yes, as I was adjusting the staves in engrave the bass bone went below the violins. Maybe that was what created this. Interestingly, on the first page Trpt. 1 dissapeared but remains on all the other pages.
