Creating new instruments - kora

A few years ago I had the following question and Daniel replied that it wasn’t possible then. Now that the ‘Edit Instruments’ is available in Dorico 5, I’ll ask again.

I am notating music for Kora, an instrument which has 21 strings, in two rows (10 and 11 strings). Because Kora players normally don’t refer to standard notation I also include tablature in my own version of notating this instrument (see diagrams). In order to do this, I have to use the ‘strings and tunings’ dialogue for fretted instruments. But kora is not a fretted instrument, and therefore the ‘strings and tunings’ option is not available. In order to use a system of tablature I have had to choose ‘Classical Guitar’ and then rename it each time in my scores as ‘Kora’ , and open the Strings and Tunings dialogue.

What I would like to know is whether I can now save Kora as an instrument separate from ‘Classical Guitar’ , which would retain all its settings including the Strings and Tunings option. I also write for Classical Guitar, so I don’t want to change its name!

Many thanks for any help on this, and I hope I have explained myself sufficiently!

I’m bumping this in the hope that someone can shed light …

Have you tried it? I think you probably should be able to. There is the option in the instrument editor to duplicate an instrument and then you can name the duplicate whatever you want.

I’ve made custom instruments before but have no experience with tablature.

Hi and thanks for replying. I think I may have solved the issue by creating ‘New Instrument for Selection’ in the Edit Instruments panel and then pretending that the kora is a fretted instrument so that I can access tablature.

Thank you.

Just don’t forget to check the star (it must be filled white) next to your Kora instrument so that this custom instrument is saved and available in all new projects !
