Creating new players from MusicXML single parts

I imported a MusicXML file from Musescore 4.5 and some parts played wrong instruments.
I deleted those part and imported them from single exports, for examples I imported piccolo, bass singer, bass drum.
I chose the option to create new players, and the players get created but they are visible only in Setup mode, not in Write mode.
How to have those newly imported parts in the main score, as it seems to be in Setup?
Thanks

It’s easier to go to setup mode, select the ones that plays the wrong instrument and change instrument.

@jesele That comes with other issues, let’s focus on this one for now if possibile.

Have you ticked the flow for the new instruments in Setup mode?
Or rather, I think they get imported to separate flows perhaps.
Then you need to copy/paste from flow to flow.
Don’t understand what other issues with change instrument.

Select the full score layout in the right panel (turns bright blue). Make sure the flow is checked in the bottom panel and the instrument is checked in the left panel.

I managed to copy/paste the music.
Well, I cannot change some instruments, the piccolo sounds like a violin even if I change it to piccolo again. Bass singer is ok, but bass drum sounds like a piano, and when I want to change, there is no “Unpitched percussions” instrument family available to choose from. I managed to find that instrument family in fact some hours ago but I do not remember what I was doing. Typically it does not appear even if I have done “Playback Template” as suggested.

Have you read the manual to learn about changing instruments?

@Janus
Why does the Bass drum sound like a piano in the first place? I would content myself and not want to change the instrument as you say.
So at least now I understand that it was imported as a pitched instrument for no reason.

It all depends on how the instrument is specified in the XML file. (I’m not an expert on that)

@Janus I believed that MusicXML was sort of a standard. I think that the problem is that Musescore called the instrument “Grancassa da concerto” and Dorico does not even know what it is.

I understand why you did what you did (export individual instruments) but it’s not the best workflow because

  1. it won’t solve the instrument problem, since it will be routed under the hood the exact way as the first time
  2. You will need to do extra work ensuring all those instruments, imported in a new flow, should appear in the first flow as well and with the proper instrument set.

It’s a known issue with xml import: it is safe to assume that Changing instrument (to the apparent same) solves many hidden problems. And I know it would be very much better if this step were not necessary, but it is :person_shrugging:

@MarcLarcher
It does not allow me to change from pitched to unpitched instrument (the Bass drum was imported as a pitched instrument).

Oh yes. That is a problem, yes. Can you create a bass drum player, copy the content of the pitched wrong instrument and copy it to the appropriate one?

@MarcLarcher
Yes, then other issues arise with strange empty players dwelling in the setup, and so on.
Now I am importing the XML in Sibelius. It also do not get the right instruments but it is a breeze for now to put everything in the right place.
Do you know how to use Halion in Sibelius instead of General Midi?

I’m sorry, although I have a perpetual license for Sibelius, I only use it to import stuff from Photoscore ultimate… I’m fairly confident your xml issue is easier to deal with than it seems — I’ve been using MuseScore exports quite extensively and have not found them problematic, but I might as well be wrong :person_shrugging:
Have you posted any offending xml anywhere, so that I can try?

It is probably easiest just to change the instrument definition in MuseScore - call it Drum and make sure its unpitched percussion - then do a new xml export.

And getting rid of Empty Players is not an earth-shattering task if necessary.

OFF TOPIC: I got the free version of Sibelius to evaluate, it is the Ultimate version (30 days left).
I see that only GeneralMidi soundset is present.
I try to add VST folders to reach my Halion Sonic plugin, and nothing happens when I click the “Rescan” button, or I quit Sibelius and open it again. I won’t find the Halion plugin.
Is such behaviour expected? I mean, the 35Gb library is not available of course, but I would like to evaluate what rendition Sibelius is capable of with better sounds.
I would understand if this is a sort of limitation for the trial version, but I feel it is strange.
Thanks for any suggestion.

there is no limitation on the trial version of Sibelius
