I have a desktop PC with Cubase 11 Pro which is validated with a dongle. I’m going to be travelling and I want to buy a laptop and install Cubase there too. Will I need to purchase an extra dongle? Is that even possible? Or should I bail on 11 and upgrade to 12? I’m perfectly happy with 11 at the moment.
It’s not possible to clone a license from one dongle to another one in order to get two of them. You can only move the existing license to another dongle (using eLCC). If you want to use Cubase 11 on the laptop, you have to plug your current dongle into it. Alternatively, you could move the Cubase license to a separate dongle for traveling so that you don’t need to take all the other licenses with you (in case you don’t need them).
With Cubase 12 and the new, dongle-free licensing system it would certainly be easier.
If you are going to travel and nobody needs to use Cubase on your desktop during that time than just take the dongle with you. Nie ma problemu.
Thanks everyone. It would be more convenient to have two dongles, but I think the answer is to upgrade to 12 and dispense with the dongle entirely.
Remember you only lose the dongle for Cubase. Check if you have any plugins that still use the dongle.
Oh lord, what plugins use the Cubase dongle? I’m not on my music PC now so I can’t check …
At least I think now most (if not all) Steinberg plugins have been converted to the new licensing system (Retrologue, Padshop, Groove Agent, Backbone, HALion and expansions, etc., …). So these will all run without dongle in Cubase 12. Regarding 3rd party, I can say I have low of stuff but only old refx Nexus needed dongle long time ago. I propose you just open eLicenser Control Center and look into the list of your plugins whether there are others than Steinberg plugins left bound to the dongle.
BTW, in the process from old to new system I had some “vouchers” from time to time in my Steinberg account that had to be opened to transfer the old dongle licenses to the new system. Maybe you have to look there too then. But it is an easy process.
Thanks everyone. I think I’m going to upgrade to 12 … it’s time anyway.
And then you’ll probably get a free upgrade to Cubase 13 which is likely to be released soon.
