Cubase 12.0.30 performance issues

When you installed your different versions of Cubase did you use Steinbergs Download Assistant becuase if you did, download assistant stores a copy of each Cubase that you download on your PC/Laptop.

Just had my Cubase 12 Pro 12.0.30 hang on the startup splash screen at the ā€œInitializing: VST Mixerā€ stage.

Dump file (made with procdump64) can be downloaded here: https://nextcloud.garyhawkins.uk/index.php/s/saTA5xMMNm6Tjam/download/Cubase12.exe_220612_180408.dmp

Further to my post above at:

which I have seen happen a few additional times, I have now had one actual hang on shutdown with 12.0.30. I think it was only one. I sent the DMP file privately to Martin Jirsak, but I noticed the stack trace did reference a PSP Audioware plugin, PSP B-Scanner, though it was quite far down in the call stack. That is a plugin I use frequently as a ā€œsecret sauceā€ on background vocal submixes, and it has a strange behavior in that you canā€™t just bypass it, only disable it, so perhaps there is some relationship there, and it was active at the point Iā€™d shut down on the night I had the hang. (While it is still in my project at this point, Iā€™ve since rendered the audio and disabled the plugin for performance reasons, and a long session with the same project last night did not hang on shutdown.)

One other thing stability issue worth noting: Yesterday afternoon I wanted to try to see if I had the issue with iZotope Ozone 9 Imager that @KennyEastMids reported above. (Note that the Ozone 9 plugins have been updated in the last few days, and I installed that update prior to this.) I instantiated the plugin on a group track in my project (which was already heavily consuming my system at that point), picked a preset, did not close the preset selector, then hit the Play button on my Roland A-800PRO controller, which Iā€™ve configured in the new remote control facility. That hung Cubase, and I captured a DMP file, with the following quick information from a Windbg Preview session:

Hereā€™s the really bad part, though: After killing the task off, I could not start Cubase again. Each time I did, it would ā€œpoofā€ (i.e. crash without any error message). There was no dump file, but there were entries in the Windows 10 Event Viewer each time Iā€™d try to start it:

A quick google of this led me to wonder if it might somehow relate to ODBC, but I didnā€™t spend a lot of time or effort looking into it, just scanning one or two top search matches.

Rebooting my system (which takes forever, so I try and avoid other than my usual nightly shutdown and morning boot up) did allow Cubase to run again, and I tried the Ozone 9 Imager in a different (much lighter) project, including using the remote play button, and I did not have problems there, so Iā€™m not sure what the fluke was with the first time.

Beyond that, though, 12.0.30 has seemed to be mostly pretty good thus far. Iā€™m at the mixing stage of my current project, which always involves trying lots of different plugins from lots of different vendors (especially Waves, PSP Audioware, IK Multimedia, and a few others), as well as unfreezing/refreezing instrument tracks, doing some audio rendering of submixes, etc. to free up performance since my system is not exactly a current top performer (it is a ā€œvintage 2014ā€ i7 5820k).

The only new observation Iā€™ve made is that undoing changes in the MixConsole in the case where plugins were removed or changed in position sometimes re-enables plugins that had been disabled (i.e. other than the ones that are subject to the move or deletion). It is not something Iā€™ve gotten (or even tried to get) a recipe for at this point (for lack of time), but it has happened multiple times.

Noted.

In this project are two instances of Kontakt 6, and Superior Drummer 3. The Kontakt libraries are a metal guitar library (Prominy V-Metal) and Submission Audioā€™s Umansky Bass. I know V-Metal can be somewhat system intensive.

I updated to Cubase 12 Pro 12.0.30 and now it wonā€™t open saying ā€œNo Valid License Foundā€! What should I do?

I had the same issue. Solved by downloading and installing the latest Download Assistant.

Personally, I think this whole system isnā€™t very user friendly.

More ISSUES

After making backups of some projects on different drive, I opened a couple and Cubase 12.0.30 claims that they are corrupt.

I then uninstalled 12.0.30 and reinstalled 12.0.20 and that opened the projects with out any issues. So I resaved them to a different location and opened them from the new loacation to check, and they open with no issues.

I uninstalled 12.0.20, reinstalled 12.0.30 and opened the project from its new location, it opened ok and seemed to play OK. I then tried

ERROR - A serious problem has occured: please try to save your project under another name and restart Cubase12.exe

I then save the project with a new name, rebooted my machine, opened Cubase, and tried to open the project - cubase gets to 3% of opening and then freezes.

I attach the .dmp which shows the issue is Cubase12.exe.

I have to force close Cubase via the Task Manager, I reboot my machine and reopen Cubase. I then try to open the project file and Cubase freezes.

THIS IS BEYOND A JOKEā€¦

I updated to Cubase 12 Pro 12.0.30 and now it wonā€™t open saying ā€œNo Valid License Foundā€! What should I do?

Were you connected to the internet when you opened Cubase?

Another day, another freeze-up for me Im afraid. 12.0.3 continues to freeze on my Win 10 (64-bit) machine.

Hereā€™s the freeze dump file it created:

Thanks
John

And yet another Freeze dump this afternoon:

Are you sure your hardware isnā€™t failing? Have you tested different computers? I own the Izotope bundle and itā€™s working perfectly fine. The number of errors you have sounds like something on your end, faulty disk or memory.

Are you sure your hardware isnā€™t failing? Have you tested different computers? I own the Izotope bundle and itā€™s working perfectly fine. The number of errors you have sounds like something on your end, faulty disk or memory.

That would make sense however, the same machine has Cubase Pro 11, Pro Tools HD, Ableton Live and Studio One on it and they all run perfectly fine.

I did not have any of these issues with CB 12.0.20, only in CB 12.0.30.

Also I have of course run hardware diagnostics as that is the first thing people blame especially software companies and I have provided Steinberg the results before.

All SSDā€™s, and memory are perfect, no issues and nothing failing.
All system drivers are fully up to date.

if I remove CB v12.0.30 and reinstall CB v12.0.20 I do not have these problems.
These problems are unique to 12.0.30.

yet another new issue.

in CB v12.0.30 I tried to open a project that opens perfectly in CB 11, and CB 12.0.20 and CB freezes while opening.

The attached dump file suggests the issue is:
C:\ProgramData\Arturia\Stage-73 V2\resources\x64\mdengine.dll

This does not happen in CB 12.0.20.

So where are Steinberg???

You release yet another flawed update but do not visit the forums to interact with users???

Can try to remove the Defaults.xml file from the following location :
Just move it somewhere else, do no completely delete it, in case you have to restore it.

C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 12_64

Then launch Cubase. A new clean file should be created.

Hi Lewis

OK done that?

Are the results positive ? Are you still experiencing any crash ?

Hi Louis

Sorry I have not replied until now but I have been busy at work.

your suggestion made no difference.

here is the dump from the freeze that happened.

AND AGAIN

This time I had Cubase 12.0.30 open with a small project.

The project was not playing when I minimised Cubase, opened windows 10 file exploior, changed to two different folders.

As soon as I maximised Cubase it frozeā€¦

here is the .dmp fileā€¦
Cubase 12.0.30.286 64bit 2022.6.14 15.59.01.052-freezedump.dmp (1.7 MB)

Perhaps it would be a good idea for those having any issues who are able to get Cubase to start-up OK to open one of the two new Cubase 12 demo projects and report on what happens. That way we will have a basis for comparing reports of issues with a common project that uses the same files and plugins.

Also, when reporting issues it would be good to know what platform (Windows, Intel Mac or M1 Mac) and OS version s being used.
