Cubase 12.0.30 performance issues

Since update to 12.0.30 during each Cubase launch I got this message.
Zrzut ekranu 2022-06-14 174244

Here we AGAINā€¦

I opened a fairly small project, did some MIDI editing and tried to save.

Cubase gave the ā€œProject can not be saved - the project is corruptā€ error.

Just to be on the safe side I went in to my pool and performed ā€œRemove missing filesā€ & ā€œRemove unused filesā€.

I then tried to save the file and Cubase Crashed.
It did not create a .dmp file.

The demo projects are not reprsentitive of most studios who almost certainly have a good range of 3rd party plugins as clients and the industry dictate.

I have never seen a single client using only Cubases own plugins.

I would agree that most studios use third-party plugins; we use them extensively here. The purpose for suggesting that people having issues play the demos is precisely because no third-part plugins are used. If the demos play and do not cause issues, then it is safe to assume that one or more third-party plugins are causing the issue since everything else is held constant; the only variable changed is the third-party plugins.

Iā€™ve been following this topic for a long time and Iā€™m very surprised at how many problems there are. My experience with C12 is that with the latest update, everything is fine with meā€¦although I have an old X299 system, with I9 9960X , for which there have been no updates for a long time and yet C12 runs ok. There were only crashes with the first C12 version. I use Waves, NI, Celemony, Arturia Soundtoys, Softube C1, UAD Twin USB, QconProG2 on Win11 and it runs ok. Even old C11 projects. Many plugin updates were offered, which are also officially suitable for Win11 and that helped a lot. I think that it is also due to the many PC components that are possible and this can lead to problems, which I have read here, but on meā€¦ fortunatelyā€¦ not to be met. Of course I have made optimizations on the PC, but these only affect the X299 system and have helped meā€¦ am satisfied and think , which Steinberg does a good job.

I, too, have an x299 based win10 system (ASrock, i7800x, 32GB) which has not been updated (firmware) in a few years, and I experience most of the issues in this thread and a couple others. On this platform and on 2 others.

Iā€™ve become exhausted about all of this, and downright hostile over the years because of all the work Ive done to test this along with the very poor email response times offered by steinberg support, the very poor interactions that often occur on these forums (always, always there are very busy accounts blaming some other vendor or some external factor.)

I cant even honestly keep track of whether cubase 10, 10.5, 11, or now 12 crash more often. My installs rarely crash during normal operation, but they crash on quit about 3 out of 5 times now.

2 out of 10 times on 10 & 10.5
3 out of 5 times on cubase 11.
3 out of 5 times on 12, 12.0.2, 12.0.3. I can have a blank project - nothing loaded, nothing routed. I can add a single sample loaded into the project as audio. I can select ā€œcreate sampler trackā€ from that sample, and get a cubase crash about 1 out of 5 times.

Cant use CPU power management or dynamic clock frequencies because of virtual CPU cores/hyperthreading problem that has been consistent since, oh I dont remember anymore, Cubase sx2? Yet if you read the official docs on the subject, it sounds like ASIO Guard fixes this ā€œfor the vast majority of usersā€. Evidence shows that it does not.

I keep seeing this basic philosophy from steinberg which says ā€œwell we didnt make those plugins, so blame those plugin makersā€ from within a plugin ecosystem where steinberg cannot survive without 3rd part plugin support. I continue to be confused at this self-destructive philosophy.

I think hanging on closing happend in 12.0.30 with projects that was initially started in 12.0.20 and earlier cause Steinberg wrote on release notes they worked on that problem. They had to change something that causing now problems with older projects. Maybe new projects with 12.0.30 will close OK.
I saw you have many issues with Cubaseā€¦
I think you should try in the future with stronger computer and your problems will be minimized.
Cubase is complex DAW and needs a lot of power.
You need CPU with strong single core performance, stable motherbord with good power supply, ram and fast C drive.
Today Computer in studio became most important
part of equipement as all workflow goes through it and we need strong configurations to work flawelessly.
Sorry for that but my opinion is that your CPU is quit slow for hungry Cubase.

I also had an I7 CPU that had problems with real-time audio. Since I switched to an I9, everything has been much better. The interaction with all the other components also helped to get a stable system. My example. Asus (also Gigabyte) mainboards are best suited. In addition, a Seasonic X power supply, Cosair 2400 LPX Ram, AMD 580 graphics card, which were better suited at the time than Nvidiaā€¦Noctua fansā€¦and I have no worries about them ā€¦

when you update to 12.0.30 did it also update your Licence manager to 1.3.1.6xx ? if you updated manually you have to manually update that too. If you have already then no worries.

@KennyEastMids check the New license Activation is the correct version but also update your old elicense and run that and open it and make sure itā€™s working.

in your dump file it has this:

Good Call RTT1

The eLicenser is for my USB dongle for Cubase 11 and the error is probibly because I didnā€™t have it plugged in to my laptop as I was using Cubase Pro 12 (internet activated).

For Cubase 12 I can confirm that the Steinberg Activation Manager is v1.3.1.698

@KennyEastMids It really depends on what your using. I use C12 but I still have still have to use the dongle. I have sound content that relies on it. I have Halion that need it and GrooveAgent. I have pad shop and retro synth that rely on the dongle. Only the main Cubase app doesnā€™t need it but everything that comes with it still does.

Now Cubaseā€™s main app does not need the dongle it still does not mean you do not have license on the elicense you might still need to run C12

If I take the dongle out my C12 will not open. I guess it will be a few months until we see the end of the dongle completely.

Anyway I thought it worth mentioning just in case that was part of the issue.

But why it opens projects in 12.0.20 but not 12.0.30 is very odd.

Overall 12.0.30 feels like a modest improvement here performance-wise (W10), but I am getting more random crashes than I have for a long time. Theyā€™re not at a debilitating level, but prior to the update it has been a while since Iā€™d had any (was on 12.0.0 prior to this).

One issue Iā€™ve been seeing relatively frequently (at least 3 or 4 times thus far, including twice in the last 2-3 days) with Cubase Pro 12.0.30 on my Windows 10 (fully updated) system is ā€œpoofsā€ (i.e. crashes that donā€™t put up error messages) when switching presets in a plugin with the transport running. I had this the other day in PSP Infinistrip, and I just had it today in IKā€™s Tape Machine 80. The former did not create a DMP file in the CrashDumps directory, but the latter did (Iā€™ve let Cubase send those to Steinberg already).

One other odd thing (at least not something Iā€™ve seen before) is having two DMP files from the same Cubase session:

The two highlighted DMP files are from the same Cubase session (including working on the same project continuously during that session). This is curious (to me) in that there was no visible interruption when the freezedump file was created ā€“ the other DMP file was created on the poof. It makes me wonder what the significance of the freezedump files are. As can be seen from my directory listing, which is all the DMP files Iā€™ve had since 12.0.30 (at least that go in the CrashDumps directory ā€“ Iā€™ve had to use procdump to capture dump files a once or twice when Cubase hung, but those end up in the directory where I installed prodump), 7 of the 10 DMP files are of the freezedump variety.

In the case of todayā€™s freezedump file, Windbg Preview shows only Cubase itself in the stack:

While the error here would seem to be in the plugin, it is curious that Iā€™m also seeing a similar thing with switching presets in other vendorsā€™ plugins (e.g. PSP Infinistrip as mentioned above; that issue was in the same project, though on a different track). And I was also seeing freezes (and sometimes poofs) in similar scenarios in earlier versions of Cubase 12 (e.g. one of the first ones I recall was with Superior Drummer 3). This does make me wonder if there is something common to Cubase that, for example, ends up passing some bad data to the plugins in some instances (e.g.if performance is tight).

I have experienced intermittent sluggishness when drawing gain envelopes to the point that it gets useless. Creating a point takes seconds, moving a point is a disaster having to click the point and wait. Then move the point and wait for the gain envelope to get drawn. If I release the mouse to early and move the mouse pointer the gain envelope point moves somewhere completely different.

The only remedy is to restart Cubase. Then all is fine. At least for a while.

I canā€™t really report any way to recreate it since it seems intermittent and appears out of nowhere.

Same here (C12.0.30, W10 i7, blablablaā€¦)
A lot of peaks, audio performance meter very high with an empty project, ā€¦but it seems a random problem. Sometimes I can work on a brojet correctly during 15 or 20 min and all of sudden, C12 comes unstable, crash, ā€¦

When you are professional, you cannot wait days & days for a solutionā€¦so, time to go on Ableton, FLā€¦because they work correclty on my system. I cannot permit myself to not work an to lose money.

Good luck Steinbergā€™s teamā€¦

I recently had FL Studio installed (W11, i5 9600k) and as it was years ago, no problems at allā€¦ Everything runs very smoothly, no hangs, no jumping peak, startup and shutdown lightning fastā€¦ No matter what plugin I load, nothing has ever crashedā€¦ Nothing but an example to followā€¦

Good of you to mention that. The reason this release of Cubase has problems is surely because the developers havenā€™t seen FL and understood that software is supposed to be without issues. Iā€™m sure now theyā€™ll flip the ā€œstableā€ switch to on.

It looks like Steinberg has anyway stoppped reading here  12.0.30 to me yet not a stable version.

I donā€™t know if this is the solution for all users since it affects windos and Mac, but under W10 and C12.0.30 (build 286), it seems that I no longer have any problems (peaks, crash at closure,
crash at opening projects etc etc) by uninstalling microsoft update KB5013887 & KB5014699 (the last update proposed by Windowd Update).

I donā€™t know how they can affect C12, I donā€™t know if itā€™s a coincidence, the fact is a lot of audio problems are now fixed and make my C12 usable.

I hope this can help some of you !
