this is something I’ve experienced which occasionally caused havoc in my projects. By happenstance I observed this behavior just today when moving a whole bunch of events (aka all tracks of song) in my album project. It seems that Cubase randomly selects other events when moving a large selection. This causes subsequent movements of these events to modify parts of the project that were not intended to be changed.
The following screen recording shows more what I mean (Cubase 15.0.5 - demo version):
The screen recording shows a selection of groups that are being moved to the right. Note that after the movement some “Bass” event is selected causing a subsequent move to affect this event as well (the selection range is also visibly extended). Pay attention to the bottom left of the screen capture.
Why does this happen? This cannot be by intend - or is this caused by some special setting I am not aware of?
Any hints are highly appreciated.
P.S.: The selected events are folders. Maybe there is something buggy?
P.P.S.: Screen capture of Cubase 14.0.40 with the same scenario (here a different event is additionally selected after the movement):
P.P.P.S.: Same situation under Cubase 12.0.70 where a lot more events have been selected after the first movement (which takes pretty long for what ever reason):
Mh, how can I identify that? And besides, I hardly doubt it as they are recordings from different sessions.
Another arguments against this theory is that - depending on the Cubase version - different events are being selected (see the Cubase 12, 14 and 15 screen captures in my initial post).
→ This rather looks like some implementation error.
Not at Cubase to give specifics, but it’s covered in the manual. If they are Selected but not Grouped then the Ungroup menu item will be grayed out, but if they are Grouped the menu item will be available. Maybe it’s in the Edit menu?
I don’t see that these events are grouped in any way. Again it seems to be somewhat random. All captures have been made after a fresh start of the different Cubase versions and every version selects different events.
Any other ideas? Personally, I’m convinced that this is a bug.
Works when moving stuff to the right, but not when moving stuff into the other direction. And apart from that, moving a selection should never silently select other stuff after that movement is done.
Thanks for the hint, but these events are not grouped. Please check the screen captures. Every Cubase version select different events after the first movement of the selected events is done.
I’ll try using range the selection. But still I do not believe that this is intended behavior.
Using the range selection does not cause Cubase to select other events (by the nature of that tool) but after moving all events in that selection simply vanish. But see for yourself.

Okay?

Edit: On a second look the moved events are not purged from the project. Instead all moved tracks are duplicated below the last track which also an undesired effect of that operation I’d say.
Not sure, but this is an unconventional method to make space anyway.
It can cause all sorts of errors if you misalign stuff and accidently not select things properly, the efficient method can also be combined into a Macro | Hotkey
1. Make sure no automation is locked. 2. Select a [RANGE] with the [RANGE TOOL] where you want the space to be. 3. Transport > Set Locators to Selected Range 4. Edit > Select > In Loop 5. Edit Range > Insert Silence
This will make sure every possible track and its automation (unless locked) from top to bottom will move down the Project Window, making space for your silent empty space.
Ack. Can try that next time, but still this won’t work when moving stuff in the other direction. IMHO Cubase should not randomly select events that haven’t been selected before.

I’ll try to create minimal project that could be used to reproduce… if possible.
Edit: I tried to make it smaller but I can’t get it below 50MB :(.
When cutting the selected events to paste them afterwards to a different location, Cubase also automatically selects some “random” events. Happens for all Cubase version I tried this on that particular project. IMHO that should simply not happen. But of course it prevents that subsequent moves “destroy” parts of the project.
