Cubase 12 hangs on "initialising video player"

I have trashed all my preferences from prior cubase installs and also still have the video player problem. I think I read all the posts though I could have missed some. What else can I try?

Nothing M8
You will have to wait like me for the update which they are working on

Same problem on my i5 HP elitebook laptop.
Luckily on my i7 desktop (with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti) it’s working fine.
Tried everything, even copy pasting stuff from desktop to laptop, but no chance.
Probably a graphic card bug.

Hi Matt ,
What is the estimated time for a fix?

All the best
John

As mods always like to highlight: this is a user not a Steinberg support forum
I always open tickets, if 1000 users open tickets for their problem with the product, maybe some day the management reacts and invests more money in better application teams (better staffed) and also a decent support…or maybe it gets ignored, as in many situations with my tickets (not touched for months, then closed or forgotten). Anyways, I’d go with a ticket in parallel and check for any help in this or other forums. At least sometimes SB officials show up and support, but it is not granted.

In my case, what solved it is disabling my extra screens and starting with user preferences disabled. Having extra monitors in Cubase, 12 especially, causes a lot of freezes or hangs for me.

Try it, then re-enable the screens after your session is open, as a workaround. It may work for you too.

I had the same problem - Cubase 12 freezes at ā€œInitalizing Video Playerā€. For me the problem is solved as follows:
Moving the folder ā€œC:\Users[name]\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 12_64ā€. Then I managed to run Cubase 12 only once. The next time it freezes on the same screen. So I deleted the same folder again, started Cubase 12 again, but this time I made a clean new template from scratch, saved a new Workspace Global Preset, started a new project, working for a while and the problem was solved - now Cubase 12 opens every time.

Opened device manager
Switch to Microsoft Basic driver
Rebooted my system
Started Cubase 12 … (y)
Restarted Cubase 12 … (y)
Opened device manager
Scanned Display adapter for new drivers…
Microsoft installed new drivers.
Started Cubase 12 (y)
Rebooted my system
Started Cubase 12 (y)

Can’t reproduce the problem.

Hope it helpt.

Hi, I’ve managed to solve my ā€˜stuck at video player’ problem. Initially I was using the old M-Audio Transit USB as my audio interface and it worked perfectly fine with Cubase 12. Then today, I needed to record audio tracks so I switched to my trusty Steinberg CI2+ interface. Stuck at Video Player and failed to start Cubase. Tried trashing/disabling preferences etc, still stucked. I switched back to the M-Audio interface and everything worked perfectly. My guess is there might be compatibility problems with the Steinberg and/or some other audio interface drivers. Try using another interface and see if it works for you. Hope Steinberg fixes this soon.

Hi all,

Who still has the problem that Cubase 12 doesn’t launch?

We are really sorry for the inconvenience. A lot of you have somehow managed to solve the issue, but there doesn’t seem to be the ā€œoneā€ single solution. Please let us know if you are still having issues with the initialisation of Cubase 12 and we would like to contact you to sort things out.

Hi Matthias, I am new to Cubase. I bought CE11, then upgraded to CE12, taking advantage of the generous offer. A couple days ago I took the plunge and bought Cubase Pro 12.
Activation went well, but the program hasn’t launched successfully since I installed it. I tried all the less radical solutions offered in the posts above, but they were unsuccessful.
The launcher stalls on ā€˜initializing: Video Player’. That seems to be the core problem for me; all the solutions I tried simply moved the problem down the initialising line.
I’m running Windows 11 64 bit with a GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, and my OpenGL is the same as others, above, 4.6.
Cubase 12 Elements opens without problem, but of course I want to use the amazing-sounding Pro 12!
For some reason, I’m unable to open a ticket. The page simply refreshes when I click ā€˜submit’ or whatever it is.

I reinstalled Windows 11 and it fixed that horrid stuck on video problem
It went straight in fast as anything
Things went wrong for me when i put the latest update into Cubase 11. Then 12 started to play up.
All working well now , No glitches but the performance meters look a bit weird. Not accurate The same load happens whether you run audio or not running it in a nutshell.

You may be onto something here - same ridiculous problems after 3 weeks of perfect performance. I always keep template and profiles backed up as soon as I make a change. Turning off the USB UR22C on windows 10 64 w/GeForce RTX 2060 helped load C12 without incident.

Utterly confused why their own hardware would be a conflict. Will try trashing the preferences folder. As others have reported, C11 still works great no matter.

also hanged around with this issue and finaly reached to have video working by ā€œdeletingā€ old and new preferences…
But as soon as i load keycommands or preferences i saved before, even profiles, or copying the files drive me a step back.
That means in my case, that i always can open a project containing a video file, but also that cubase hangs at first start playing (playing sound only).
Of course, my win10 and all my drivers are up to date…
globaly, i may have video working if i’m ok to forget all my workflow (keys and prefs)
Hope they will really fix this for next update…

I reinstalled windows 11 and Cubase 12 works great no Stuck on video player. Hurrah!!!
It worked for one day and i do not like the average and peak performance levels.
I switched my focusrite driver over to low latency driver to see what the comparison was and the average and peak perfomance meter maxed out.
I restarted my computer and guess what . Stuck on video player again BOO!!!
I restarted again and blue screen , i waited and computer started and blue screen again .Another BOO!
Oh No!! Computer will not repair . Now totally mad!!
Lucky i made a image of drive again.
When it is back I will now go back to Cubase 11.
When is the magic fix going to arrive?? . I have £86 doing nothing.
Cubase 11 working great again.Average and peak performance also satisfactory now. Hurrah!!!
When you have a pretty fast I7 32 gig ram, you expect that to handle Cubase 12 surely.
Whether Windows 11 has anything to do with it ,i do not know.

All the best

Hi, I tried renaming the Cubase 12_64 folder, but it did not help. I could provide additional information. What info would be relevant?
I use Windows 10 with all available updates installed.
Thanks!

Hello Matthias
I have still this problem on my laptop.

I’m running Windows 11.
Asus UX580GEX.
Multiple GPU Intel Graphics and Geforce GTX 1050 TI with Studio Driver.

I have tried all of the solutions, and some of them have worked, but does not anymore.
No i cant start Cubase at all and it hangs at the ā€œInitializing video playerā€ message.

Interestingly, I managed to start Cubase once after reinstalling it. After closing Cubase and starting it again, it got stuck on the ā€œinitialising video playerā€ message again.

I don’t understand the video problems at all. My programs run now, with videoengine.dll in the components folder, but Cubase can’t open any video.

I don’t think it’s my computer either, because videos play fine in media player and other programs.
Only Cubase refuses to open or play videos. The only conclusion I can come to is that something is faulty with Cubase.
