Cubase 13 Pro, no sound from Virtual or MIDI Keyboard

Hi

So I finally bought Cubase 13 Pro and Absolute 6 and I am testing out Halion 7. The weird thing is, neither my Virtual Keyboard, nor my MIDI keyboard seem to work to produce any sound. When I use my MIDI keyboard, then I see the blue signal bar appearing on the transport panel (lower right), but no sound. But when I click on the keyboard notes within the VST itself, then there is sound.

Any idea how to fix this?

EDIT: Also, my MIDI keyboard seems to be detected without problems by the program. Its name appears correctly in Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Port Setup

EDIT 2: Ok, weird - on the Inspector Panel, Input Routing, it said “Missing: 3- Axiom 25”. I changed it to “All Midi Inputs” and it works. But I am wondering why it wasn’t set to “All Midi Inputs”, per default.

EDIT 3: I am trying to enable “Map Always” on the Missing Ports popup and see if this will permanently solve the problem.

If there is an incoming MIDI signal not detected by Halion 7, I would check again these :

  • the Monitor setting of the involved track
  • the MIDI channel(s) used with the different Halion 7 Sound slots.
  • the state of the Preferences > MIDI > MIDI Thru Active setting : it should be ticked.
  • and yes, the MIDI ports setup : something seems wrong in it, at this point : a screenshot of your Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Port Setup panel could help.

Beside this, it seems that you are making a confusion between inputs and outputs with your two screenshots and, more important, DO NOT try to ‘Map Always’ the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth : see here why so…

Hi, thanks for your reply. I am still relatively new to Cubase, especially the newest version and its settings and plugins. I am attaching some screenshots below. Not sure if they will appear in the right order.

Is this the one? (the orange speaker button on the screenshot)

Sorry, I am not sure what you mean by this.

It was already ticked.

Posting another screenshot (of my MIDI settings)

You are right, my oversight.

I already mapped it. How can I undo this?
EDIT: Nevermind, I followed these instructions https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/10031200615314-Windows-please-hide-Microsoft-GS-Wavetable-Synth-in-Cubase-and-Nuendo-for-improved-stability and now I can see the GS thingy again. Now I have unchecked it and it looks like this. I hope, that is what you meant:

Yep… :slightly_smiling_face:

I was talking about the MIDI channels set in the different sound slots inside Halion 7.

Do at least one the slot has a MIDI channel matching the track inspector output channel setting ?

Beside this, your MIDI Ports Setup seems OK.

Yep, exactly. Let us know how things go from here.

EDIT - Looking more closely at your MIDI Port Setup, I see two input ports from the Axiom 25. Have you tried both, and if you know it, what is the purpose of the Ext MIDI In one ?
