Cubase 14 DRUMS

Some feedback re: drums in C14

  • no GM mapping on the new drum track ?!! how are we supposed to play it with an e-Kit ?!! Not even a way to tweak which notes are assigned to pads?? I don’t get it

  • GM maps need an overhaul

  • maybe there could be a GM map learn, hit a hardware controller then the item on the VST interface and it gets connected?

  • still waiting for the ctrl click on a GM map activated midi or instrument track to be able to select all elements on one lane, eg ctrl click on the left hand side to select all hi hats in the part and change velocity at once.
This works in key editor with the piano roll on the left but is still not implemented for the Drum editor, simple trick, please !!

On top of 4x4 pad grid you have bank selector (2). Moving between them decides which MIDI notes play which pad. Perhaps you can get to the right notes like that?

Otherwise, I don’t think Drum Machine and Patterns were created with people playing & recording their e-kits in mind…

Yes I can see how banks follow octaves of sorts, but doesn’t work to map to an e-kit !
I hope they quickly add GM to drum track, TONS of people play electronic kits with VST instruments!!

In the meantime, perhaps Track Input Transformer could convert e-kit input standard into Drum Machine standard? I never used it, but reading about it it seems like that is exactly what’s needed & it can be saved as a preset & re-used:

Track Input Transformer • Cubase Pro Help • Reader • Steinberg

Sorry if I’m mistaken about it

So… is Groove Agent gone in 14?

No. Why would it?

There’s no mention of it in the videos… is there integration between the two? … just wondering.

Integration between Drum Machine and Groove Agent? I don’t think so.

But of course you can use GA with the new Drum Tracks and Pattern Editor:
Pattern Editor • Cubase Pro Help • Reader • Steinberg

I would also expect one to be able to open/export a Drum Machine instrument in Groove Agent - just like you can with Sampler Track.

Yes… that’s the kind of thing I was thinking.

If you want to have a GM Map, ignore the Drum Track and Drum Machine. Use Groove Agent (SE) and the Drum Editor as before.

I absolutely agree.

Why should they ignore Drum Track? It’s just a special type of MIDI Track where MIDI Parts are replaced by Patterns, which are still MIDI but with multiple additional bonus features.

Drum Track works great with GA.

Because there are no drum maps on a drum track and Antoine clearly is looking for drum map functionality.

There is no way to have GA work on a drum track. Much in the same way that you cannot use Padshop on a Sampler Track.

Ok, thanks.

Thanks a lot Johnny, I am probably going to ignore Drum Track indeed for the moment. GA is cool for me anyway.
And yes let’s hope the GM Maps and drum editor improvements make it for a C14 update soon !!
