Cubase 14 - Mixer History / Undo Bug with disabled plugins

Ran into a quite annoying bug today in C14 (14.0.5):

Adding plugins to a channel with disabled plugins (not bypassed, but Alt-Click-Power-Disabled) - and undo’ing this via the mixer history results in disabled plugins being reactivated. Going forward in the undo history does not restore the correct channel state!

Repro:

  • Create an empty project
  • Add an audio track
  • Add 2 plugins - and disable (again, disable - not bypass!) the last one.
  • Add another plugin to the channel.
  • Undo adding the last plugin via the mixconsole history
  • Previously disabled plugin is now active again.

I hope the other aspects of mixer-undo-history works as intended, but i would appreciate the developers giving this pretty important aspect of the DAW a good “inspection”.

this happens for me in C13 as well, maybe even 12.
Undo simply enables all the plugins on the track.
I usually only undo when I’ve accidentally removed a plugin, or just want the one I removed back, so for me it’s the reverse situation - where you add a plugin then undo it, I remove a plugin then undo it.

Happens to me as well in both C13 and C14 (Mac Silicon, latest Ventura).

Happening in 13 and 12 and probably even in 11.

Anyhow the history seems to have new interesting features in C14 but it’s very buggy actually for me

Hmm! Well - i guess it’s somewhat positive, that things are “business as usual” - but i’m certainly not loving the idea of undo being hit-or-miss …

@Martin.Jirsak … would you care to forward this to the dev team?

Mixer history very buggy in Nuendo 13 as well.
Sometimes not working at all, have to reload song.
Sometimes certain parameter changes not covered.
No clear pattern in this misbehaviour.

It would be great if you could record clear examples of the issue.

That would be useful. Based on the OP’s repro, I get the expected results on both N13 and C14 Pro.

In my case:

New project with one track
Insert two plugins on the track
Deactivate the first plugin
Deactivate the second plugin
Add a third plugin

Undo → removes the third plugin
Undo again → reactivates the second plugin
Undo again → reactivates the first plugin

If I start redoing, the steps play out in reverse order, as expected

KT66 - are you sure that you are deactivating the plugins - and not just bypassing them? On windows, deactivating requires an Alt-Click on the plugin power-button.

The bug is still present here in C14.0.10 - and interestingly enough powering off a plugin does not appear in mixer-history, which might be a clue on how to squash the bug. Bypassing, however, is listed in the history and works as expected (as far as i can tell) …

I’m well aware of what Deactivate means.
I have a video of this procedure in both Nuendo 13 and Cubase 14, but unfortunately the clips are too large to post here.

Maybe you could upload as an unlisted youtube link? I’m really curious whats going on here, since i hit the bug every single time - and other posters confirmed it

I’ve got it to fail now.
Last night I tried the test on a project where I had already inserted and deleted plugins a number of times (I was fooling around with something else), and it worked OK.
This afternoon I tried again on a freshly opened template and I can consistently get the bahaviour you describe. It gets fuzzier after deleting and re-inserting plugins in that I can eventually get it to work sometimes, but there’s clearly a problem. The ‘deactivate’ portion of the activites disappears from history and can’t be recovered.
