I’m not sure if I’m missing something here, but find that if I enter notes using a combination of the Key and Score editors sometimes the Score editor displays the note lengths incorrectly. This happens a lot with dotted notes, where the Score editor simply omits the dots, but also in the attached screen shot where a tied crotchet instead of quaver is shown at bar 23. Has anyone else come across this or am I doing something wrong?
Hi,
It’s because of the Display Quantize in the Score Editor.
The score editor tries to interpret MIDI notes (ie from the key editor) in the way that gives the cleanest notation, and it needs to see the whole bar of music. So if you have a note that doesn’t end exactly on a beat then it will usually be rounded to the nearest beat. However, if there is another note following then you may find the rhythm dot appears because it wants to avoid unnecessary rests. In other words, don’t worry about the exact rhythm of each note as you enter it, because the notation also depends on the notes that come after it.
If the rhythm isn’t exactly what you want, then using the nudge start/end/left/right commands from the Score Editor will set the notated duration explicitly, and that should respect the rhythm dots.
Thanks both. I realised that I didn’t fully understand how display quantise works. For dots, yes everything does indeed display correctly once the full bar is entered.
I’m really coming to like the way the new score editor integrates with the key editor.
