I’ve spent some time playing around with the Drum Machine and the Pattern Events. It’s an amazing tool, no doubt.
I would like to suggest few improvements that will turn it into a tool that could be used for more complex pieces - symphonic and Eastern European / Middle Eastern music and rhythms.
Would be great if we able to have access not only to the steps, but to the bar numbers (bars) as well.
This could be done by drop-down menu
Multiple note durations per instrument (as shown on the screenshot above).
Would be great if we could split selected steps into shorter durations, or combining them into longer.
Most probably Note Durations mode would be necessary here, and an option to switch between Steps and Note Durations
The note durations should be correct in case we are going to convert the Pattern Event into a MIDI Part for further using in Dorico or the Score Editor.
Conclusion:
Currently the Pattern Event is useful mainly for pop and electronic music, but not for more complex genres like classical, folk, jazz… music that is going to be notated.
Being able to select MIDI channel per lane
With the samplers (Kontakt, Sine, HALion) one might want to load different sounds (e.g. percussion) into different instrument slots which have overlapping play ranges and then use MIDI channel to trigger they right slot.
Maybe being able to add a some text (notes) per lane (the lane details area as enough place for that)
(though I would honestly consider this a bug fix suggestion, not a feature request) a lane should keep the pattern that is in hidden/ out of range steps - if you reduce the number of steps and hide those steps and then increase the number of steps again, I think the pattern should be still available and steps should not get automatically cleared out.
