Cubase 14 Score Editor note input with mouse

Hello folks

In the new Score Editor, when entering notes with the mouse, I believe there is an option to hear the potential pitches while hovering over the staff before actually placing the note - is that correct?

Now, crucially, when hovering the ‘ghost’ note before placing it and hearing the pitches, do we hear the full chromatic range of potential pitches or is it unalterably locked to a diatonic scale?

I have always composed in the Cubase score editor, but compose entirely by ear. I need to hear the full chromatic range of potential pitches and this informs where I actually place the note.
This is the one reason why I cannot use Dorico: the auditioned pitches are locked to the diatonic. So up to now the Cubase score editor has suited me best. Has this now changed in version 14?

Thanks

That’s not the case in the new Score Editor, however it’s a feature that would be nice to bring back in an update.

Oh! I thought at list that functionality remained! I read this in the Cubase 14 Score Editor Help doc…

  1. Optional: On the toolbar, activate Acoustic Feedback.

This allows you to hear the pitch of the note while entering or editing notes.

So I’m hoping at least that is possible!
But further, I hope the full chromatic range is audible.

Any more thoughts on this?

Well, you hear the notes as soon as they are being entered, but not the shadow notes just before they go in. We’ll look at improving these aspects though.

Thanks for the response Stefan.

So, just to clarify…
Although the C14 score editor guide has the phrasing “This allows you to hear the pitch of the note while entering or editing notes.” - which could actually be used to describe how things currently work in the score editor in C13 and earlier - in C14 the pitch only sounds when the note is actually committed to the staff by clicking/releasing the mouse button (and then subsequently selecting to move around etc)? Is that right?
If so, I can’t use it for the same reason I can’t use Dorico.
I write by ear, so I need to hear the potential pitches. Hovering over the staff, when the pitch I hear matches the pitch in my mind, then I place it. If there’s no way to hear a pitch before placing, then it no longer works for me - which is a great shame as I understand this is a great update.
For now I will continue to use the functionality of the creaky old score editor in C13.
Please consider bringing back this functionality: while entering notes with mouse, hearing the pitch - and the full range of pitches chromatically - before placing the note.

Thank you

Yes, that’s right. I’m afraid, the pitch only sounds on release. I can see how the wording in the help is misleading, and will ask to get this adjusted. We are also planning to enable auditioning of notes before being entered, but can’t make any promises as to when exactly this is going to happen. I will make sure it is mentioned in the release notes when we do.

Agreed.

An important point when you later consider adding the functionality @StefanFuhrmann

That would be great - thank you Stefan!
Can I just emphasize that, when you do get round to enabling the auditioning of notes before placement, please can the full chromatic range of potential pitches be available to hear!
This is sort of an ominouse repeat of my recent experience of Dorico.
I bought Dorico 5, found it was unusable to me for this same reason, and
corresponded with Daniel on the issue. I was delighted to see in the next update the audible auditioning of pitches before placement was introduced - BUT the auditioning notes are locked to the diatonic not the chromatic. This unfortunately makes it as showstopping for me as if there was no auditioning at all.
So please… if you reintroduce audtioning before placement - Great! Just please make the auditioning chromatic!

Thank you so much.
And congratulations on what appears to generally be an extremely successful update!

Jamie

Yes, I’ve made a note about the chromatic pitches, I even did so the first time you mentioned it

Thanks mate! Really appreciate the responsiveness!
Have a splendid and intriguing Friday!

Interesting… is this really still the case with Dorico (5.1.60).? Just curious…

Very much so.
Prior to 5.1.60, the audible auditioning of notes entered via mouse - the ‘ghost’ notes as they are hovered over the stave - was not even possible.
They would only sound when placed.
5.1.60 introduced this auditioning functionality - but the range of pitches that sound are locked to the diatonic.
